Note: I won't be showing the "duds" for the rookie leagues unless they are top prospects or top draft picks. A lot of the guys in the rookie leagues are young and adjusting to pro ball. Many of them never make it past rookie ball, and even the truly gifted ones can have bad weeks, months, etc.

* Player is in the top 10 on the Halos Heaven top prospects list

AZL Angels (4-2)

His struggles at the plate have been mostly against righties. He’s batting just .100 against righties but .625 against lefties.

Griffin Canning (RHP, 21 - 2nd Round 2017) - Has not yet played. The Angels will mostly just be working with Canning in bullpen sessions, etc. and he may not see any game action after throwing 119 innings already this year for UCLA.

John Swanda (RHP, 18 - 4th Round 2017) - Has only started 1 game and he gave up 4 hits and 4 runs in only 0.2 innings.

Sam Holland (RHP, 23), you don’t hear a lot about this dude but he has some impressive stats, including a 2.54 career ERA in 161 minor league games. Last year in 29 games he had a 0.83 ERA and 0.67 WHIP. Over his last 6 appearances he hasn’t allowed a run and has struck out 7 in 9 innings.

[Moving up - July 11th] Matt Thaiss* (1B, 21), is hitting .366 over his last 10 games with 5 RBIs, 4 walks, and 8 Ks. His first AA hit was a double. So far for Mobile, he is 4 for 8 with a walk and a stolen base.

Grayson Long* (RHP, 22), has been as impressive as advertised when he was drafted. He his handling his own quite well at the AA level with a 2.97 ERA in 15 starts. He threw 6 shutout innings with 8 Ks, 1 walk, and 3 hits on Tuesday.

Greg Mahle (LHP, 24), Mahle has been a force in AA this year with a 2.08 ERA. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last 11 appearances (15.1 IP).

Jaime Barria* (RHP, 20), Barria looked sharp in the Futures game, giving up just 1 walk, zero hits, and striking out 2 in his 1 inning pitched. He is only 20 years old and has a pretty ridiculous 1.78 ERA and 0.82 WHIP in AA this year. Those numbers would be the 3rd and 1st best in the league if he had enough qualifying innings.

Michael Hermosillo (OF, 22), continues to heat up and is hitting .342 over his last 10 games with homer and 8 walks.

Sherman Johnson (2B, 26), he seems to handle AA pitching much better and is hitting .324 over his lst 10 games with 4 walks. He was only hitting .235 in Salt Lake but has a .310 AVG so far in 22 AA games.

Bo Way (OF, 25), is only hitting .103 over his lst 10 games and .229 this season.

David Fletcher (SS, 22), Fletcher is hitting only .179 over his last 10 games with 0 walks and 7 Ks.

Jake Jewell (RHP, 24), the 5th round pick from 2015 has been solid but not outstanding. He hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in any of his last 8 starts (and has just twice this year) which amounts to a 2.97 ERA. He has a 3.54 ERA on the season with a 1.23 WHIP and .267 BAA.

[Moving up - July 10th] Brendon Sanger (OF, 23), went 2 for 11 in his first 3 games with the BayBears.

Salt Lake Bees (49-41 / 1st place)
Salt Lake City, Utah
Level = AAA, Pacific Coast League

Carlos Perez (C, 26), has a 9 game hitting streaking going back to June 23rd. He’s hitting .515 over those games with a homerun, stolen base, and only 3 Ks. He also has 8 walks. Behind the plate this year, Perez has thrown out 50% of the 28 stolen base attempts against him.

Shane Robinson (OF, 32), still tearing it up in AAA with an 11 game hitting streak and he is hitting .471 in those game with 8 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.

Ramon Flores (OF, 25), was signed in the off season for depth. He has a .364 AVG over his past 10 games with 11 RBIs and only 4 Ks. He has a .392 OBP in Salt Lake this year.

Cesar Puello (OF, 26), was released by Texas’ AAA team and picked up by the Bees on June 1st. He was hitting only .247 for the Rough Riders but has a .400 AVG and .453 OBP for the Bees. Over his past 10 games he’s hitting .487 with 4 homeruns and 15 RBIs. Clearly he likes his new found home (and probably the altitude).

Kaleb Cowart (3B, 24), Cowart has 3 homeruns, including a grand slam, over his past 5 games. He also has 10 RBIs and 3 walks in those games and is hitting .318 over the past week.

Troy Scribner (RHP, 25), Has been pretty solid for Bees. In his last 3 starts he’s allowed 8 runs in 17 IP along with 21 Ks and 5 walks. He pitched an inning in the AAA All Star game, giving up 1 hit and striking out 3.

Jason Gurka (LHP, 29), has been solid since landing on the Bees in early June. Over his last 10 games he has a 1.38 ERA and only 2 runs allowed on 13Ks in 13 IP.

Nolan Fontana (SS, 26), dropped down recently and hit only .211 over his past 10 games with 9 Ks and 4 walks. His .278 AVG on the year isn’t super great for the PCL but it’s ok and he also has 8 HRs on the year which is good for 3rd on the team behind Puello and Cowart.

Brooks Pounders (RHP, 26), is supposed to be a top prospect, right? In 9.2 big league innings this year he has a .300 BAA. In his last 10 minor league appearances he has a 5.02 ERA. He does have 17 Ks in 14.1 innings though so I guess that’s cool.

Manny Banuelos (LHP, 26), has given up a run in each of his last 3 appearances out of the pen.

John Lamb (LHP, 26) Lamb has 3 starts now and has given up 8 runs in 15 IP along with 8 walks, 15 hits, and only 7 Ks. Pretty terrible.

Nate Smith (LHP, 25), has thrown 9.1 innings in rehab down in Arizona since June 24th. He has only given up 3 hits and has allowed zero runs on 14 Ks. Considering he’s facing 18 year olds this is the dominance we should be seeing. In his last start he worked up to 4.1 innings.
