MondoLinks: Cron's boom dooms the broom

New, 108 comments

CJ Cron's 2-run late-inning pinch-homer wards off a Rays sweep. Now time to swat the Nats.

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

Stop me if you have heard this before: the Angels have come out of the All-Star Break on the cold and stiff side. Yesterday they managed to pull out a 4-3 win and stave off broomage, doing so on an 8th-inning 2-run pinch-hit home-run from C.J. Cron AND and then surviving near-total melt-down by Bud Norris in the top of the 9th. The best part was Cron's home run totally negated the 7th-inning Logan Morrison In-Yo-Face Bat Flip.

To be honest, though, the offense has been floundering for a while now. Over the last 7 games (including yesterday), the Halos have scored 15 runs in 62 frames. That's a touch over 2 runs per game.

And now that Nationals and Red Sox come to town.

A Little Bit of Angels News

Danny Espinosa has been DFA'd. I blame myself. It was just last week (one week ago today) that I noted to the world that there was a chance that Espinosa could end up with enough Plate Appearances for his Batting Average (currently sitting down there at .162) to crush the Franchise all-time record for lowest BA on the season. But somebody working in the LAA Front Office obviously read that article and freaked out at the thought of Bobby Knoop losing his place in the legacy of Halo Lore. Espinosa had to go..............But, the truth is that Nick Franklin ain't any better at the plate. I'm still tracking this as if it were something similar to a combined no-hitter. Espinosa & Franklin can still combine to shit all over the all-time record for futility..............

Garrett Richards has been cleared to begin throwing. For whatever that's worth...........At least, so far, playing catch is going Ok..........

If the Angels are going to make a run for it, these guys need to get their Trout-less mojo back, and  fast.............

Josh Mayhood's Library of Mike Trout Hagiography

Mike Trout is back!

Now that he has spotted everybody some 35-40 games, where do YOU think Mike Trout will finish in the WAR race this season?...........

Everywhere In Baseball

Right off the top, trades are happening all over the place. The A's just sent Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson to the Nationals, just in time for the Angels to have to deal with both of them again. This season, Doolittle has a 0.00 ERA and 0,375 WHIP against LAA. And Madson has an ERA of 1.80 and WHIP of 1.000...........

Meanwhile, the Jose Quintana and the Cubs picked up last week has his first start, and was brilliant............

Here is a thought: once we get to robot umps, and we gain the opportunity to generate audio cues to the fans for strike and strikeout events. And THAT can lead to custom pitcher-selected walk-off music............

Some pretty bold second-half predictions. Including Mike Trout winning the AL MVP as Aaron Judge and the Yankees tail off?............

Aaron Judge needs  some time off. That Home Run Derby killed him. He is still hitless out of the break, 0 for 13 with 5 strikeouts. Although, last night he came close. Too bad he didn't have a friendly ballpark home run dimension to help him out there............. But, finally, somebody is asking a key question: what if reality sets in for the Aaron Judge hype train?.............

Billy Beane has finally figured out that has has been over-thinking this Hidden Market Inefficiency Thing that only He knows how to discern.............

Whenever you read one of those angry baseball fan comments raging against WAR based on some serious degree of misunderstanding, send them here with the instruction to read slowly and understand that there is a very strong relationship between WAR and player compensation.............

The biggest takeaway of this story of big-time hitters who pitched, is that this is something that used to happen. Nothing speaks to specialization more than the reality that Mike Trout is not going to be tasked with pitching 7 innings at any time in his career..............

Trade Frenzy time. Everything is a sign of something, and the something is always BIG............

What? Did Sandy Alderson finally hit his own wall of shame? Tim Tebow will NOT be called up to the Big Leagues in 2017? Think of all the marketing! Think of all the merchandise!! Think of all the ticket sales and media coverage!!! Oh, yeah, that's right. The Mets suck and Alderson probably doesn't anybody paying too much attention to that..............

Oh, Derek Jeter. Are you finally learning that the real world does NOT overpay for hype?.............

The Duffle Bag

I offer up this link for one reason only. MLB teams cannot trade draft picks, but it turns out they can trade International signing bonus pool money??............Pitcher Stacey Piagno get's a Win for the Sonoma Stompers. That's just the 3rd time a woman has collected a W in a pro game. Sometimes the "Win" IS a meaningful stat...............Nelson Cruz: "Just messin' with ya', ol' buddy."................Giancarlo Stanton has the fundamentals of Baseball all backwards.............But Stanton would do well to follow the glove skills of Derek Holland.............This is why, whoever you are, you Just Say No to Yasiel Puig rumors.............If you are going to any effort to snag a home run ball, then...just...why?................The Nation loves the Cubs, but Chicagoans are already so over it.............Chicagoan baseball reporter, though.David Kaplan must have gotten hired to handle all the bandwagon fan demand. Dude goes full twitter fail............Oh man. These specialty Minor League BBQ-themed "Pitmasters" unis are pretty great. But they could have been epic...............

Jordan Serena Destiny Watch

Serena got into the game on Friday, going 2 for 4 and driving in 2 runs. The key to the game was a 6th-inning 2-out base hit to drive in the tying and winning runs as the 66ers defeated Stockton 4-3.............Too bad he didn't see action on Saturday night, when the 66ers whupped the Ports 16-8..............

Oh, and hey! Over in Mobile with the BayBears Matt Thaiss, in 5 games, is hitting .409/.417/.455 with an OPS of .871..............

Perhaps more significant would be David Fletcher, the guy who was moved from Mobile to Salt Lake and open up a roster spot in Mobile for Thaiss. In his 2 games in Salt Lake, Fletcher is .500/.500/.625 with an OPS of 1.125. Yeah, I know. Just 2 games..............
