TuesdoLinks: Independence Day Linkage

The Halos are in Minnesota, and we should all be on holiday.

Here I sit, typing up a Links article instead of paying more attention to the holiday time. And there you are sitting, reading these links instead of digging the Biggest of Bang holidays. And to reward our dedication, pretty much most of the Baseball world chose to do very little except play a few games. So there ain't much for you and I to gather over. Sorry, It happens.

One of teams that chose to do very little were the Halos, getting dumped 9-5 in a game that was far from as close as the final score might indicate. Alex Meyer was pretty bad. 5 earned runs on 6 hits (2 of which were homers) and 4 walks across only 5 innings. If Meyer's last outing, against the Dodgers, felt like 'dancing between the raindrops' as he struggled mightily but avoided damage and limited the LADs to a single hit, this felt more like young Alex getting caught out in the deluge.

So this is 3 losses out of the last 4 games. Maybe the magic Trout-less bus is finally running out of gas.

More of the Lost Weeks Links which, in honor of the fact that so little is going on now, are presented in 'shotgun style':

EVERYTHING LUMPED TOGETHER

Yesterday I laid out just how it was that Mike Trout could make the All-Star Game. Today I am here to remind you that the ASG doesn't mean spit, and the owners and managers know it, and Mike Trout will not be playing in any All-Star Game this year because the Angels don't wish to rush any rehab. So all that talk leading up to now about how well Trout was doing, and how he was ahead of schedule and all that? Yeah, that makes for great copy to keep LAA in the news, but wasn't to be taken seriously. Mookie Betts will take over for Trout as the CF starter...............

That MLB official memo to all Franchises trying to debunk the recent findings of juiced baseballs? Consider that "re-bunked". Note one of the independent study authors had found differences between the 2017 ball and the 2014 ball, enough to account for differences in HR rates. And the MLB wants to refute that by claiming that there are no differences between the 2017 ball and the 2016 ball. Not the same thing...............

Wha?? MLB has diversity issues? Who knew? Umpire Angel Fernandez has filed a discrimination suit against MLB. Now, what Fernandez is claiming may actually be very true. It would be in keeping with MLB actions in many other aspects of their business. But it's Fernandez who is filing suit? THE Angel Fernandez??..........

I always wanted Josh Reddick. Great defender who always seemed to make key plays against the Angels. With a bat here was merely average, but average bat and great defense sure seemed like a big bump up from what we have had in LF for years now. Well, this is why you don't want to listen to me. Reddick is as 'un-clutch' as one can get...........

Or, maybe you SHOULD listen to me. I'm the guy who wanted Daniel Murphy when he was a Free Agent that everybody was passing on. The Nats got him cheap, and his production at 2B would have been making one hell of a difference for this franchise. And here is another reason: Murphy knows damned well that FanGraphs exists, and is very familiar with how to use the FanGraphs data.............

Chris Sale is a very good pitcher, having a very good season. And there is a very good reason for this.............

One of the great things about Mike Trout is that, when he is healthy and playing, it's real tough for writers to pump up other players for the great things they do. This does not mean that those writers are working overtime to pump out daily homages to Trout, just that any time a writer wants to pimp some non-Trout player, they know that the the first thing in  anybody's mind is "Yeah, but how does that compare to Mike Trout?" Well, Trout is not in the limelight. So it's a chance for other players to shine. And we get headlines like Cody Bellinger Is The New Star In Hollywood. It's thekind of headline that wouldn't be written 4 weeks ago, and won't be written 4 weeks from today...........

The All-Star Game needs an overhaul. I would suspect that most of us would agree to that. But these ideas for such an overhaul are pretty weak. We need to be more bold. For example, just because the game is for the fans does NOT mean that the fans should rule the selection process. Sure, it makes for great marketing and opinions feed controversy and dialog. But screw it. Leave it to a panel commissioned by the MLB Front Office. Baseball is entertainment. Our job is to be entertained. Let MLB choose how to entertain us............

That Jamie Horowitz guy who took over Fox Sports and fired all the writers and flip everything to video format just last week? He's been fired..............

(h/t UniWatch) Ugly Minor League uniform of the week belongs to The Brooklyn Cyclones. Captain America. Ugh...........

I am sure that Alex Curry would be much happier getting post-game interviews with sunflower seed showers than Gatorade showers.  She should lobby for that............

Prayers are in order for one of Baseball's great personalities, Jim Bouton, who is seriously debilitated by brain disease..............

Joey Votto, the guy who bragged he could win the Home Run Derby should he ever get an invite, got an invite. And Joey Votto then offered up a long jag as to why he wouldn't ever participate in the Home Run Derby. "...it's a style of hitting I never do."..........

Jordan Serena Destiny Watch

Mobile BayBears win 8 to 3, but Serena was not in the lineup. That's because Serena has returned to the IE 66ers, He played Sunday and went 1 for 2 with 2 walks and a run scored as the 66ers defeated the Lake Elsinore Storm 4-1. He did not play last night and the Storm bested the 66ers 9-6..............
