MondoLinks: We. Had. Fun.

New, comments

Our jalopy may have dropped most of the critical parts at the starting line. And maybe it experienced a bunch of mishaps as the race wore on. And maybe it finally exploded there just short of the finish. But we had a gas along the way!

Not every baseball fan gets to be in a real playoff race. Fewer get to be in a race with a massive over-achieving underdog. We had more than our fair share of cups fully buttered, but for many of us it was a chance to enjoy the wild ride of miraculous possibility and have a great time.

If you are one of those negative nellies who smugly announce that you knew we were a sub-500 team all along, I am sure that even you have now have the good fortune to cash in that betting slip you made a couple of weeks ago that the Angels would not win another game

A Little Bit of Angels News

Hmmm. Even the Official Angels news outlet is forced to confess that this team has sucked eggs this month. I suppose it's some formal means of getting out in front of all the obvious now that even the Facebook crowd has figured it out.............

Yep. Just as I suspected. Mike Scioscia pulled Garrett Richards over the weekend based on pitch count. That would be so that in the event that NEXT year we find ourselves at the very end of a season where, after a long and grueling slog of daily competition and getting just enough luck and just enough health to find ourselves fortunate to be on the threshold of a playoff spot with just a few games to go, and Richards is brilliant in a key game, Sosh can feel more confident in letting Richards throw the 15 more pitches he had already stated were there to be had. So here's to 2018, Sosh!..........

Oh, excellent, Yunel Escobar has worked his way all the way back to the point where he expects to face live pitching again this week. Maybe, just maybe, he gets reactivated in time for one of the three now-disposable home game against the Mariners? Maybe he comes back, performs like a stud, costing the Halos one or two draft slots next June and enticing Eppler to forego a search for a 3B upgrade. (Oh, and here is a surprise: Huston Street will NOT be making it back this week, after all.)..............

Arte is taken to task for being, overall, a bad owner. The article may seem way overboard to you and I, who do not see him as a Frank McCourt or Marge Schott or even a Lew Wollf. And the author goes on this tirade by being miffed at the roster "coincidence" that will save Arte about $1 million. (Of course, maybe that $1MM puts some tax or draft spot at risk that we have yet to account for.) But if you set aside the point about pitcher bonuses, and the general tone of animosity, there still remain some seeds of insight that are worthy of retaining............

The latest Ignore-The-Damage-And-Tick-Off-The-Milestones Pujols metric. Tying A-Rod for most 100-RBI seasons in history...............

LAA Minor League Roundup via RotoGraphs..............

For the record, Victor, I clicked EVERY DAY hoping to links HH'ers to a new insider brain dump..........

Josh Mayhood's Library of mike trout Hagiography

I now have proof that Josh is not the only one who has noticed that trout is sucking in September. trout has noticed it. Sosh has noticed it. The media is noticing it. I now await the pummeling due any day that reveals the media having noticed that this happens every September. And this time trout doesn't have an injury on which it can be blamed.............

trout should be at 'qualifying' status as of this morning. 4 PA's last night would put him at 481, a 3.10323 average per LAA game. He still has to hang on to that to finish out the season, though. He needs 22 more PA's to lock it in

Everywhere In Baseball

I am somewhat surprised that took as long as this, but Bruce Maxwell has brought The Anthem Protest to Major League Baseball.............(This season, over in the NFL, it's become a game of one-upmanship.)...........And, yes, you are free to protest, just as others are free to ignore and/or object to your protestations.............

The playoff ship sails away from port without us. But we watch precisely because the results are not pre-ordained, as much as they are highly probable. What they Do do, is reflect which teams took proper advantage of key moments to proceed forward. And that is the power behind the sadness of failing to get in: anything can happen.............

In the middle of this Buster Olney roundup is an interesting observation that a robo strike zone, by granting the top of the zone for pitchers, will blister all the batters who have move to higher launch angle swings, driving up home run rates...........

You and I, as LA Angels fans and NOT part of the gobsmacked Jeter-worshipping droolers, will not be as surprised to learn that Derek Jeter is kind of a jackwagon. Before even formally having control of the Marlins, he has canned a handful of Front Office staff including a bunch of fellow ex-MLB players who, as true insiders, know how full of shit Jeter might be. But worst of all, Jeter would not able of being the guy who actually looked these people in the eye and informed them of his decision. He had the team President do it for him, as he was also firing the team President...........And that is NOT a good look............But it might be the birth of a NEW meme!..............

All in, The American League rocks and the National League stinks. But hey you guys over there, just keep letting your pitchers bat for you...........

Personally, I would say that Jose Altuve's success starts with his very tiny strike zone, and THAT leads pitchers directly into his swing where, if you want, you can end it..........

This is a meme I fear. As Joe Torre sees a playoff stud in Aaron Judge, the "Mr. May" label is back in action. To remind, Reggie Jackson was known as "Mr. October" for his playoff exploits, while George Steinbrenner famously branded Dave Winfield "Mr. May" for the way Winfield stormed out early in the year and then faded in the crunch. If that sounds familiar, it should. And somebody soon is going to look at trout's September swoons and make re-use of the tag............

The Duffle Bag

We may think it's pretty crappy how the now-AA Tigers are folding on behalf of the Twins, but Alex Wilson still has our hopes for recovery.............Nice touch, Toronto............I sure hope that this article is still left alone by the time you read it. WIth the dateline of "September 24, 2017", the story is how the Angels defeated the Blue Jays 6-3 to hurt the Toronto chances to take the AL East. (Clicking READ MORE takes you to August 25th of last year.).............Poor ESPN. Showing two of the best baseball teams competing and they still don't get high ratings. Gee, maybe if they had spent some time building up the Dodgers and Nationals instead of feeding Yankee-Red Sox pablum all the time they wouldn't have that issue.............
