WeekEnd HaloLinks: One last weekend of ball

New, comments

With no playoffs for us, the only thing more disappointing than losing in Chicago is that after 3 more days, we won't have another chance to lose in Chicago.

Patrick Gorski-USA TODAY Sports

September is becoming a bad habit. It would be nice to see some focus and energy out of these guys, letting we fans know that they really have the willpower to fight back against the outrageous fortune they endured all year.

Over the most recent 10 games, Detroit is 1-9 and Cincinnati is 2-8. And the Angels are 2-8. Above that, Texas and Baltimore are 3-7 and it all gets better from there. Yes. The Angels are tied for second-worst record over these past 10 games. But wait, it gets worse. We have seen only 9 victories all month. And we have been dragged through 16 losses, with a chance for 3 more! And that kind of losing happens on the back of this kind of play. Tim Anderson wanted to make a play happen, and Ben Revere has been trained to turn the page.

I need to indulge in more "page turning" snark while I can. Currently, we only have one more year on the Scioscia contract. Hell, Arte Moreno will be 72 when Sosh's contract expires. I wouldn't be surprised to read about the possibility of new ownership by then. We could lose a whole lot of memes in the coming months.

But here we are. The final weekend and the final series and the final chance to trade up a slot in the June draft with the Mariners. It's something to look forward to. And, one last time, I encourage you to love every minute of it. Because the next time you read one of these Links compilations our long slog of zero live Angels baseball will have commenced. It sucks to lose in Chicago, but after only three more days we won't even have the chance to lose again in Chicago. We might have to start talking about beer again.

A Little Bit of Angels News

Andrelton Simmons is, without a doubt, the LAA MVP for 2017. The guy never takes a play off. Let's swim in some Simmons loving............

You are either convinced that Justin Upton will re-up with the Angels, or you are convinced that he will not. Before the end of the third day after the World Series ends, that is when you will get to start yelling at the other side...........

These are the days when STL fans FINALLY STFU on their anti-Arte and anti-Angels whining about stealing away their Albert Pujols. They got the brilliant baseball player, and we are paying for it...........

Yahoos! sports-writing auto-bot is still drunk. Again, note the dateline of NOW as Yahoo talks about our upcoming series last year. No, Yahoo!, we are NOT closing it out against the Blue Jays.........

MLBTR gives us 3 things to need. #3 is pitching, which is a need every team says about itself every year. What is overlooked, though, is third base. If I were Eppler, I would be going into winter exactly as I did a year ago, with the same questions about the same health issues of the same rotation candidates, and the same attention to fill a bullpen with another generation of nuts and bolts. And then I would hope that those bolts which fit well in 2017 are sustainable, making my life just a little bit easier. But 3B? Man, after Upton and Phillips, THAT is a place that demands real GM work.........

I know the pictures are fun and all, but I never get into player hazing at the end of the year. So I don't miss the Angels not doing it anymore...........

What happens in other places when the Angels find a way to lose to the White Sox. They seem to have a far different attitude than we..........

Just this: mike trout loves his Philly sports teams.............

Oh, and this (maybe the last one of his for 2017?)...........

Everywhere In Baseball

Something that might actually be fun to watch this weekend, would be the race between the Rockies and Brewers for the final NL Wild Card spot. The Rockies' magic number is 2, but they now close against the Dodgers, who are winning again. Then again, the Rockies are one of only 2 teams with winning records against the LADs, at 9-7 (the Angels split, 2-2). Meanwhile, the Brewers close with the Cards. Both are 5-5 over the last 10 games, and the Brewers are 9-7 against STL this year. It's conceivable that we get a tie yet out of the NL second WC contest............

How about the early echoes of Award Season where there is zero concern or controversy about how a Mike Trout will get jobbed? We haven't had this level of peace since 2011.............What we are seeing, instead, are sabre-friendly writers lamenting their chance to argue in Trout' favor..............

You probably have not noticed, but New Era, the long-time maker of MLB baseball caps, has been creeping in with their logo this season by plunking it on the OUTSIDE of the official caps. Expect to now find it impossible to notice in all the postseason uber-closeups on television. But here is something you will NOT see pointed out, which you should also look for: some players care not one bit about having the maker logo advertised on the side of their head, and have been pulling it off. We should make a sport of tracking them down..........

Let's talk about concussions. We read about that a lot in football. We know about it forever out of boxing. It happens in baseball, too. Catchers, especially.......And MLB doesn't know how to properly deal with the issue...........

Hmmm. One way to think about The New Marlins is that Derek Jeter owns 4% of a $400 million debt, putting him $16 million in the hole...........

Way back there in the more secluded pastures of the older baseball minds lurks the awareness that the giddiness of the 2017 home run parade smells uncomfortably familiar. Here is a 2-part piece that compares 2017 to the PEDs era. Part 1 is an interesting breakdown as to where the additional home runs have been coming from. Part 2 has an interesting bunch of data points about player age differences...........

Long Form Lovers Alert: seek ye here a fine piece on how far back female sportswriting actually goes..........

What if Arte Moreno actually DID sell, and we fans were the ones who bought it? If that happens, I nominate myself for in-stadium promotions. I'm totally the guy to fix the lame-assed giveaways while, at the same time, revolutionizing seat-selection systems. You get the role of Team President and I'll send you my resume..........

I LOVE this. This whole thing that UniWatch does about sports uniforms has been done before, and done well. But the fun part is how the author of the newspaper article makes a point of fighting against the old guard. This is, in fact, her way of trying to appeal to the younger generation of sports fan. In 1963, that younger generation was ME...........

I don't think this list of 2017 MLB plot holes goes far enough into the plot hole that is Albert Pujols. For example, it fails to notice the implausibility of having the worst performing player in all of baseball being placed in the most important spot in the batting order of a team striving to make the playoffs. I mean, who would DO that? Never in real life, right??..........

Dave Dombrowksi is a man who knows a thing or two about assembling a winning team that cannot be afforded.  Just to put this out there: the 2017 Red Sox are the 3rd-most expensive team in Baseball, at $222 million...........

Harold Reynolds is still doing it. Going off and claiming that the Cubs turned things around in 2017 due to the intangibles that come from a closed-door player-only meeting. Read the article slowly, though, and get to the part where it points out that over the subsequent month of play after that meeting, the Cubs only won 11 out of 23 games..........

The Duffle Bag

John Lackey, who as I linked yesterday may be about to retire, is going out in full Lackey mode. Always one more out closer to the beer.............Yeah, this is the way to do it. If you are living the baseball life, and you are an announcer of fun shit like baseball, you have fun. You take over a food concession just for the hell of it............If only Chicago sports people knew anything about Chicago sports history...........The biggest contributing factor as to why the Angels are sitting out the 2017 post-season - except for the massive amounts of suckage the Angels did all by themselves, would be Detroit..........Oh, MLB. You are such a bunch of clueless old guys...........
