TuesdoLinks: The Age of Ausmus Begins

New, 55 comments

2018 is in the books, as is Mike Scioscia’s era. A new winter dawns.

Thus begins the period of mixed bags.

On the one hand I don’t need to wait until 10:30 PM when all the daily action is concluded before I start mucking up the spelling and grammar scores of the Internet.....On the other hand, the fWAR meter for Mike Trout never moves. I know. I check daily.

On the one hand, there is no live baseball action to debate and be wrong about. No manager controversy. No bullpen failures. No baserunning gaffes.....On the other hand, we have tons awards and hot stove moves to debate and be wrong about.

On the one hand, there are no Instant Replay reviews to drive us crazy.....On the other hand, the entire season is now one big instant replay on YouTube.

On the one hand, there are no regional baseball viewing ratings to track and and defend against those who suggest baseball is dying.....On the other hand, the season is over. Baseball is dead.

Long live baseball with these Still-Bustin-Ass-To-Keep-You-Connected-HaloLinks:

Before we get to MLB, let’s take a pause and celebrate Darth Jessica, one of 30 female writers throughout SBN’s MLB team sites. What, Jessica? You didn’t think I would find that???

A Little Bit Of Angels News

Andrelton Simmons wins the 2018 Fielding Bible Award for shortstop. That makes 6 in a row...........(No, Mike Trout did not get one also. That would be Lorenzo Cain. And Martin Maldonado didn’t win one, either. That was Jeff Mathis. It’s all here.)..........

How did the reality of Shohei Ohtani stack up against the pre-season projections? Interestingly, pretty close..........

Ryan Brasier of the Red Sox got into 9 games this post season. He pitched 8.2 innings of relief and nabbed an ERA of 1.04. And, no, that was not all against the Dodgers. For that, Brasier was a valued part of the playoff effort that yielded a ring for himself and his teammates. Why do I bring this up? Because Brasier was drafted by the Angels in 2007. He even made it up to Anaheim when we got to 2013. We let him go in 2014 and he did a 2-year minor league stint with Oakland before going over to Japan and pitching for Hiroshima Toyo Carp for a year. Boston brought him back to MLB this past March. But Salt Lake City remembers their minor league buddy............Bobby Cassevah remembers him, too............

Oh, and that other almost a Halo pitcher did pretty well, too. (For those who missed my link last week, Kelly was about to be drafted by Eddie Bane when he got a call from some cross checker asking if he would sign, and a drunk Joe Kelly acted like a jerk. Something he regretted shortly thereafter.)..........

Everywhere In Baseball

No, any Red Sox fans who need to come here because we are the Best Damned Daily Links on the Internet. I am not going to be covering all the news about your duckboat parades..............But I will give you this. Remember the good old days when a team lost a Free Agent holding a QO and got back a cool draft pick as compensation. Yeah, those were the days. And the Red Sox played them perfectly, which is how they built the key youth core of their current roster..........So here they are now. Once upon a time they wanted us all to see them as the poor underdogs trod upon by The Evil Empire of New York. In reality, they wanted to be The Evil Empire themselves all along. And here they are..........Oh, crap, what the hell? I might as well get it out of my system. Here...are...your...Red Sox...recaps..........

Ian Kinsler went from playing alongside the G.O.A.T., to almost being the goat, to getting his ring. Crazy shit, huh?.........

Why go chase a Bryce Harper now?.....And why go dumping a boatload of money on Manny Machado?.....Why do any of that when you can save your ammo for a Mike Trout in 24 months?............

No, today’s rumors say that the Yankees will avoid those two. But those same rumors suggest that the Phillies want those same two of Harper and Machado...........

Deep Machine Learning says that Mookie Betts will be named 2018 AL MVP. Or, you could just look at the season stats..........

One of Houston’s coaches is returning to St. Louis. Jeff Albert was one of the guys that moved from STL to Houston with Jeff Luhnow, just before all that hacking controversy. Albert goes from assistant hitting coach with the Astros, to top dog hitting coach for the Cards. Who knew that hitting coaches had assistants?..........Up in Oakland, extensions for the A’s brain trust all around..........

If there is one consolation to seeing the Red Sox take another WS title in our era, it has to be watching the Dodgers lose 2 WS in a row. And that pairs with watching the Rangers lose 2 in a row. As the Rangers noticed..........The Rangers’ window slammed shut pretty fast thereafter. Has the Dodgers window just closed, as well?..........But the Giants had the better shade..........Remember, everyone, the last World Series won in Southern California was STILL in Anaheim!........

Not everything is healthy in baseball. Sorry Rob Manfred, but modern analytics should not be the new filtering mask that extends racial bias in the decision-making ranks of MLB.

The Duffle Bag

The only prediction that was 100% correct for this post-season.............Yet one more reason I don’t go to Magic Mountain..........If baseball is a business, how does Clayton Kershaw not know his own business?..........(h/t UniWatch) Wait. MLB sold the rights to the label of the bubbly shit that was sprayed all over the visitors clubhouse in The Latrine? Seriously. Enough. Before we start selling the rights to celebration f-bombs. When the rush to park your every waking moment on social media goes hilariously wrong...........Make millions and millions as a TV talking head. Spend those millions to make sure you have row 0 seating behind home plate. Act like an ape on global TV trying to mock a Craig Kimbrel, who is dusting you back into irrelevancy..........
