Winter ball is over with the Puerto Rico League wrapping up on January 27th. The Angels had some prospects playing winter ball, so he’s a look at some notables.
Jefry Marte
Dominican Winter League
Marte had a great winter with a .313 AVG, .402 OBP, 2 HRs, and 12 walks in 24 games.
Yes - he IS still with the club.
Carlos Perez
Venezuelan Winter League
Perez (who’s days as an Angel are probably number), hit .314 witha .355 OBP. He walked 5 times to 4 Ks in 17 games.
Still waiting to see what becomes of Carlos Perez for the 2018 season.
Zach Houchins
Venezuelan Winter League
Third baseman Houchins hit only .255 but with a .349 OBP, 4 HRs, and 20 RBIs. He also struck out 26 times to 15 walks.
Houchins is about the only third base prospect the Angels have in the near term pipeline.
Dayan Diaz
Dominican Winter League
Diaz was impressive over his 13.1 innings with a 0.68 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and .167 BAA. He struck out 13 and walked 5.
Those numbers are a stark (and GOOD) contrast to how Diaz fared in the regular season
Felix Pena
Dominican Winter League
Pena had a rough go with a 7.36 ERA, 2.32 WHIP, and .344 BAA. He gave up 11 hits and 6 walks in 7.1 innings.
One of many guys who will vie for a bullpen spot out of spring training.
Osmer Morales
Venezuelan Winter League
Like Pena, Morales didn’t fare so well. Over his 14.1 innings he gave up a massive 27 hits which amounted to a .397 BAA.
Morales will land back in Salt Lake where he put up a pretty solid season last year.
