Angels look to right the ship after tough series with Boston

Well, there is a chance for a turn around from the Red Sox series when the Angels face a team who dropped 3 out of 4 to the Padres last weekend - right?

The Angels haven’t played the Giants since a 3 game set in 2015 where they were swept. But the 2015 Giants were MUCH different than the 2018 Giants. - a team, who as of this writing, had scored the fewest runs in all of baseball.

Starting pitching has been pretty good for the Giants but their bullpen has blown 6 out of 9 saves. Despite this, the Giants bullpen somehow has a 0.4 WAR compared to the Angels -0.3 WAR. Advanced metrics. Go figure...

GAME 1

Andrew Heaney v. Jeff Samardzija
Friday, April 20th @ 7:07PM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Relevant Stats

Summary:

Heaney, in his first start of 2018 threw 85 pitchers over 5 innings and gave up 3 runs on 7 Ks to the Royals. This will be his first career start against the Giants.

Samardzija hasn’t thrown a game yet this year and was schedule to make another rehab start. However, his rehab start was skipped thanks to Tyler Beede being sent back down to AAA, so Samardzija got the call - despite giving up 6 runs in 2.2 innings during his single rehab start.

Verdict: An important first step if the Angels want to win this series and hopefully Samardzija is still a bit raw so the Angels can jump on him early.

GAME 2

Garrett Richards v. Derek Holland
Saturday, April 21st @ 6:07PM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Relevant Stats

Summary:

Richards REALLY needs to stop giving up so many walks - 15 through 20 innings so far. He’s also given up 8 runs and 3 home runs. Hopefully he settles down a bit and makes it to the 6th inning.

Holland has had mixed result with 8 ERs over 15.2 innings. He’s also struck out 16. Last year he tossed 6 innings against the Angels and allowed 3 runs and 7 hits over 6 innings.

Verdict: If Richards throws well, the middle game of this set should lean toward the Angels.

GAME 3

TBD v. Johnny Cueto
Sunday, April 22nd @ 1:07PM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Relevant Stats

N/A

Summary:

Parker Bridwell or Jaime Barria will probably get the start here, with my preference being on the later. Barria had a great debut last week while Bridwell has given up 25 hits and 16 runs in 12.1 innings. Whoever gets the nod has an uphill battle in trying to defeat Cueto.

Cueto has been vintage Cueto through 3 starts. In 20 innings he’s allowed only 1 run, 2 walks, and 11 hits while striking out 16. He hasn’t faced the Angels since August 2015 when he threw 8 innings of 1 run ball (a home run to Albert Pujols)

Verdict: Really tough anchor for this series so hopefully the Angels go into it up 2 games to none.

Overall Verdict: The biggest test of the Angels young season, this series could easily swing either way. At least the Angels have home f this off.
