Thor’sLinks: Halos Wet The Bed. Goose Gets Cooked.

New, 194 comments

Two rain delays wash out Shohei’ Ohtani’s outing, and Cam Bedrosian washes out, period.

MLB: Los Angeles Angels at Detroit Tigers Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Welp, Mike Scioscia should be especially please now. The Lords of Weather jumped in and helped curtail the delayed start of Shohei Ohtani, delaying him twice more with the rain of misery that is Detroit. Ohtani did get in 83 pitches between the raindrops, holding the Tigers to 1 run on 3 hits over 5 innings, collecting 5 K’s. And he had stuff. He hit 101.1 mph, the fastest by a starting pitcher in 2018. That’s in the Aroldis Chapman neighborhood, except that Ohtani is good for more than an inning and a half. And there at the fifth, before the Second Coming of Industrial Perspiration, Ohtani was still filthy. Just ask Jose Iglesias............Andrelton Simmons dazzled Major League Baseball by Simmonsing silly fly balls, flashing some well-deserved All-Star madness..........But in the end such preemptive precipitation forced manager Mike Scioscia to hand the game over to Cam Bedrosian, and the real floodgates truly opened. One out and 3 earned runs later Bedrosian had converted a 1-1 tie into a 1-3 deficit, handing the failure over to Jim Johnson. Johnson allowed another pair of Bedrosian’s baserunners to score before surrendering a run of his own making, and that was it. Except for a wild goose chase, where even the goose saw the line on the scoreboard as something to be punished, everything else was a slog. Angels lose 6-1.

Now the best we can hope for is a split against a team that is described as having a “rotation in tatters”.

Have some Bullpens-Drag-You-Down-Links:

A Hell Of A Lot Of Shohei Ohtani News

Ohtani getting the earlier votes for AL RoY.............

A Little Bit Of Mike Trout News

Trout caught turning Detroit fans into Angel fans..........Shocking, but equal time means a fair acknowledgement. ESPN (of all places) points out how Mookie Betts cannot keep pace with Trout............

A Little Bit Of Angels News

Trout tops all players in Power Rankings, and Andrelton Simmons comes in at #5!..........

Early returns are coming in, with another pull for Ohtani as AL RoY and for Trout as AL MVP. I am a little flummoxed that I don’t see recognition of any Halos for CYA or Fireman of the Year?.........

Michael Hermosillo is doing kind of Ok in Salt Lake. And he plays right field. I have gone from being Kole Calhoun’s pre-season champion to staring at the clock, on death watch. Calhoun has had a hit in only 6 games all month. That’s 17 0’fers in May alone. A .119 BA with an SLG of .134. He is the main anchor in the butt of this offense. And I am done...........(David Fletcher is still tearing it up, too.)..........

Some minor oddities in the saga that is Mike Scioscia’s 1600 win coaching career:..........In Sosh’s first year managing the Halos, he coached Tim Belcher. Belcher’s rookie season was 1987, with the Dodgers, and Scioscia was his catcher. Also on that 1987 Dodgers team was Bill Madlock, who started with the Rangers in 1973, when Madlock played alongside the Rangers’ 3B - Jim Fregosi..........

Everywhere In Baseball

Robo strike zones are coming, and their approach is quickening. I have to admit, they probably are already at the point where they cannot be any worse..........And another thing. Managers can’t be sweet talking computers into having shit go their way: “...but now it’s become so much more objective with replay...There’s not any advantage you might be able to gain thanks to the relationship you have with umpires.”..........

If you want to exploit platoon advantages with the un-tapped market of catchers, as the Astros have figured out, first you need to have a catching inventory where offense is paid enough attention to in order to merit exploitation. Catchers? Offense? Who knew??..........

Let’s celebrate the Rockfield Peaches. Because we can.....and because we have the Women’s WBC coming up soon enough. Late August out of Florida..........Also, applause to the Mets..........

You want to get crazy with out-of-the-box bullpen thinking? Then let’s get CRAZY!..........

After DFA’ing Hanley Ramirez, the BoSux have taken the next step and gone full scorched earth, waiving him right out of Boston. Proving that there is simply no room in the Red Sox locker for a guy who can’t keep his PEDs secret.........

Carlos Gomez is still on his tirade about the non-randomness of random drug testing..........Gomez is especially pissed about Dominicans getting caught............Maybe it’s not an MLB problem. Maybe it’s a Dominican problem..........

Think about it. If we didn’t have a Brian Kenny, Harold Reynolds would rule MLB fan opinion..........

Maddon and his Cubs are starting to get undeservedly chippy.

Unhealthiness trends, which are going horrible: Alex Reyes made it back only to immediately turn right around and head off to recovery land again..........Byron Bruxton is another guy who just came back, only to exit right on out..........Newbies to the DL are Tyler Saladino of the Brewers.....and Kenta Maeda of the Dodgers.....Jeff Samardzija AND Dereck Rodriguez of the Giants., although Rodriguez’ injury is not considered to be serious.....Rhys Hoskins has put his own self onto the DL..........And Steve Matz wins the booby prize..........CHase Utley? Well, he’s just old..........

The Duffle Bag

Citi Field...Mets...Dumpster fire...It was inevitable..........All Star Ballots are out this Friday. And, yep, confirming earlier reported rumors Shohei Ohtani is listed as DH. Watch him lose out to CJ Cron.........And why no prop bets on Ohtani?..........Twitter is the sticky trap for any fool. Even those with mics..........Mike Moustakas and Alex Gordon are at the forefront of player complaints for missing millions on player contracts. They are also at the forefront for not being able to count all the way up to 3..........Jared Hughes might be able to just barely outrace a bullpen cart, but what’s the value of a relief pitcher taking the mound already out of breath?..........
