Angels 37-32
Athletics 34-35

While the Angels are coming off a sweep at the hands of the Mariners, the A’s are coming off a sweep a the hands of the Astros. Ain’t that quaint? Two division rivals getting swept by the top 2 division rivals.

The Angels offense hasn’t been doing a whole lot with 23 runs over their past 6 games (could be worse) and the GOOD news is the A’s offense hasn’t been doing a whole lot either with 19 runs over their last 6 games.

Last time these two teams squared up was to start the season and the Angels won that series 3 games to 1 and and overall score of 22 to 14.

Know your foe:

A’s - who’s hot (last 7 days):

Matt Chapman .652 OBP, 1 home run
Marcus Semien .400 OBP, triple
Khris Davis .292 OBP, 4 home runs

The A’s have 5 bullpen dudes with a 0 ER over a combined 12 innings. Those guys are Casilla, Hatcher, Hendriks, Treinen, and Trivino

Weather Forecast

GAME 1

Tyler Skaggs (3.08 ERA) v. Chris Bassitt (1.29 ERA)
Friday, June 15th @ 6:35PM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Notable Stats

Summary:

Next to Jaime Barria, who has pitched almost half as few innings, Skaggs leads this starters in ERA this year. Over his last two appearances he’s allowed only 1 run over 13 innings and when he faced the A’s back on March 30th, he held them scoreless over 6.1 innings while allowing only 3 hits.

Pitch Arsenal:

Chris Bassitt? Who the heck is that? Just some dude that happens to be making his 2nd big league start of 2018. Bassitt missed part of 2016 and all of 2017 thanks to TJ surgery - not that we’d know anything about that. He threw 93 pitchers over 7 innings while allowing only 1 run 3 hits in his sole start this year for the big league club and had a 6.10 ERA over 38.1 innings in AAA.

Pitch Arsenal:

Verdict: Skaggs has been good, but can this offense hit against a pitcher that has been TERRIBLE most of the year? I’m not so sure. At least it’s a bit of a different-look lineup.

GAME 2

Nick Tropeano (4.83 ERA) v. Sean Manaea (3.49 ERA)
Saturday, June 16th @ 1:05PM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Notable Stats

Summary:

NiTro has been ab it, well, not so good. He coughed up 10 runs over his last 9 innings which comprised of starts against the crappy Royals and so-so Twins. He’s also given up 4 or more runs in 5 of his 10 starts. He hasn’t faced the A’s yet this season.

Pitch Arsenal:

Sean Manaea has had a few rough starts this year - but not only a few. He’s been solid with 64 Ks and 18 walks over 87.2 innings. He also faced the Angels back on March 30th and held them to just 1 run on 4 hits over 7.2 innings. That one run was courtesy of Mike Trout who has owned Manaea with 3 bombs and a .556 OBP over 18 plate appearances.

Pitch Arsenal:

Verdict: This is not a warm fuzzy pitching matchup. Let’s hope the offense is awake.

GAME 3

Andrew Heaney (3.68 ERA) v. Daniel Mengden ( ERA)
Sunday, June 17th @ 1:05PM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Summary:

Andrew Heaney threw a 1 hit complete game shutout sandwiched by 5 run outings against the tiers an Mariners. Those are some pretty huge swings. Heaney was pretty brilliant in the month of May with a 2.64 ERA even after giving up 5 runs to the Tigers. This will be his first appearance against the A’s in 2018.

Pitch Arsenal:

Mengden and his poor-mans Rollie Fingers stache will be closing out this series for the A’s. This hopefully is good new since he gave up 6 runs (5 earned) to the Angels over 5.2 innings earlier this year. Coincidentally enough, he’s also given up 6 runs in each of his last two starts. Be carefully with this dude, he did throw a complete game shutout against the Diamondbacks and has 6 starts in which he’s given up 1 or 0 runs.

Pitch Arsenal:

Verdict: Heaney vs. Mengden should be a good matchup for the Angels.

Overall Verdict: The Angels should? win this series? Last time these two teams played, the Angels offense was VERY different - as in producing runs. Let’s hope that this series is a new start since it’s the same team the Angels started the season against. Need some mojo? Play the A’s! Maybe.
