Playing the Royals seems to be like selling your soul to the devil. You win, but the cost is high. Earlier this year, in **freezing (note, not actually freezing) temperatures, the Angels swept the Royals in Kansas City, but Shohei Ohtani was thrown off his pitching schedule. And now, Friday at mid-day, this:
Shohei Ohtani will be placed on the disabled list with a grade 2 sprain of the UCL. He underwent a PRP and Stem Cell injection yesterday with Dr. Steve Yoon in Los Angeles. He will be re-evaluated in 3 weeks and we will update his plan of care at that time.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Alright, let’s break this down one-by-one.
Ohtani is going on the DL = he’s going to miss at least 10 days.
He will be evaluated in 3 weeks = he’s out at least 3 weeks
Grade 2 sprain of the UCL = well, it’s between Grade 1 and Grade 3 (just kidding, I don’t know how to analyze this)
Undergoing PRP and Stem Cell injections = if you recall, this was a preventative measure that Jeff Passan reported on earlier this year, right after Ohtani was signed. There’s a chance this leads to TJ surgery.
With Andrelton Simmons already out, and the Angels 4.5 games out of the division, this is the kind of injury that punches one in the stomach and makes the trek towards the playoffs that much harder.
Paging Josh Mayhood right now to ask about possibly lifting the monthly f-bomb rule, but until then, remember that you are only allowed one a month.

So screwed that we’ll take after the Mariners losing their best player and catapult into first place.
