Thor’sLinks: Trey’s weak

New, comments

Halos manage only 3 baserunners. Get out-hit by 3 times. Fit game in under 3 hours. Lose 0-3.

MLB: Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Mariners pitcher Marco Gonzalez was hurling mashed potatoes, rarely reaching 91mph. It didn’t matter. The full sum of the LAA offense was a single, then another single, and later on a hit batsman. Those two singles would get one baserunner as far as second base. The hit batsman would get all the way to third base due to a wild pitch and an infield ground out. Clearly, scoring 9 runs the night before takes a lot out of the modern professional athlete.

The M’s out-hit the the Halos by a factor of 3.

The M’s outscored the Halos by a factor of 3.

In the entire game, one guy hit a home run. One guy walked. Both teams combined for one hit with runners in scoring position.

Neither team could be bothered to stick around for anything close to the typical 3-hour mark.

Angels lose 3-0, and it’s an easy night for the laundry machines inn the clubhouses.

Let these be your Far-More-Consistently-Productive-HaloLinks:

A Little Bit Of Shohei Ohtani News

July 19th is our next Ohtani checkup target date, so maybe next week’s WeekEnd HaloLinks?.............

.....But Sports Illustrated is already deciding on Shohei’s health and future..............

A Little Bit Of Mike Trout News

Maybe there really IS too much of a good thing?............

For those of you not paying attention, Trout has generated only 12 of 1 fWAR over the last 2 weeks of baseball. He’s been messin’ with the kryptonite again...........

A Little Bit Of Angels News

Garrett Richards had an MRI.....Garrett Richards spent time waiting on the results of that MRI.....In the meantime, it’s just an ‘irritation’. ......Finally, we had what we were waiting for, It’s the UCL. Now we wait on the TJ surgery news, while I wait to see what this says about his stem cell therapy success......The ‘irritation’ is now transferred to us fans...........

Ian Kinsler is still showing value. maybe not with lumber in his hands, but..........

Everywhere In Baseball

I agree that the modern, information-driven, world of Major League Baseball is less impressed with the Trade Deadline. And tanking teams exacerbate the trend. But I don’t agree that teams care less specifically because of the odds towards making the playoffs. I think teams that are certain to make the playoffs are just as certain of their playoff competitors, and still worried about how they match up. This is something worth watching, because it leads to the practice of not assuming that playoffs are a crapshoot, but something for which GM’s can take action...........

Bud Norris was our grizzled veteran last season. Clearly he learned about respecting grizzled veteran leadership while in Anaheim. because Bud Norris is now the grizzled veteran leader in STL and he is acting like a douche, which is something happening a lot with the Cards anymore..........

Ken Giles has been a Major League ballplayer for 5 seasons now. And he was a big part of the Houston 2017 championship season. But he has not been a huge part of the Houston 2018 success. In fact, relative to the rest of the team, he has sucked. Giles is also a hot-head who does not have a firm grasp on the employer to employee dynamic. In response, since the Astros are a team that can easily afford to do this, Giles is now on a bus headed to AAA Fresno, where he is to learn about that very dynamic............

Remember the last off season, where we were pummeled by the Eric Hosmer story to showcase some sort of owner collusion? The one where the Padres panicked and gave Hosmer a huge contract in the end? For a few weeks things weer going well in San Diego. We haven’t talked about it but I have been watching Hosmer bounce around until settling back to his career not-so-high. Now I am not the only one who has noticed.

Just a thought, but wouldn’t “winning a lot of 1-run games means that you have a good bullpen” assume that the bullpen had only a 1-run lead to protect in the first place? Just counting games where the run-differential ended at 1 seems likely to fog up the picture pretty hard..........

MLB Cathedrals took down the proposed new Rays stadium as presented in their marketing preview. There are a lot of good points made there...........In contrast, Erik turned me on to this piece from 2 years ago about our own stadium. Beautiful..........

You people failed to make sufficient mockery of the A’s yesterday with that Astros walk off link. So Grant Brisbee did it for you............

Here you go, Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies flat out admitting all that is wrong with modern hitting and why the shift needs to remain in order to correct the bad trends in the game: “If you go out there thinking, ‘I’m going to hit the ball to the left side,’ most of the time you’re going to be out or you’re not going to square the ball up. So I just go out there and try to hit the ball hard anywhere in the park, and if it’s outside, I just try to flip it.” And people wonder why we have things like rising strikeout rates and rising home run rates and pitching dominance over the game? I say shifts, shift and more shifts until players return to the skill of putting balls into play, and then we get to see more exciting games..........

This is an entire article on Tim Tebow. But it has a couple of great references that make it worth reading. First, Tim Tebow is not Mike Trout, and never will be. Sorry Tebow Maniacs. The second is a reference to ‘Dancing With The Stars”. Tebow has turned that actual show down, but that is precisely what Tim Tebow’s MiLB career is all about. It’s the baseball equivalent of a celebrity game show. All he needs is a mirror ball trophy at the end..........Here’s his All-Star dance number.............

No more free pizza after grand slams in MLB. And the world is a far, far better place because of it..........

Coming from a person who has a highly reliable inside source, the Yankees might land Machado any minute. This will have an impact on the MFY depth chart over on teh left side of their infield, possibly triggering a second trade of sending away an important young name in exchange for long-term pitching.....And the bandwagon for MFY/Machado among the scribes is loading up......Jon Morosi is hearing that the Orioles have an asking price of at least a #1 franchise prospect..........When thinking of what the Machado trade package might end up looking like, think back to the Yeonis Cespedes package..........

The Duffle Bag

Joe Maddon is a smart guy. Except for the part about picking on wives. And I still wonder about Aaron Judge a year ago..........My takeaway from this tweet is that Jon Heyman doesn’t like it when we shoot down his actions of carrying water for Scott Boras..........When knowing how to buy baseball merchandise does not inform you as to how to behave like a baseball fan..........Eric Lauer. We need to get him. Now..........What the hell with all the idiotic baseball these days? Are players taking an extra dose of stupid pills for July?................Brandon Belt laughs, but how do we know that it is not true?...........

OT (almost): Major League Baseball ain’t the only sport where they go apeshit over uniform uniformity. Keep in mind that the underlying reason is for the administrators to protect the huge sums of sponsorship dollars they extract from major contributors, where the dollars flow into the headquarters (where the administrators spend their time), as opposed to flowing into the pockets of the players that we are tuning in to watch...........
