MondoLinks: Vlad Impales History

As the Halos take the weekend series versus the Mariners, Vlad takes a Halo cap into the HoF

MLB: MLB: Baseball Hall of Fame-Induction Ceremony
Vlad in his Chill Blue Cool HoF moment
Detroit Free Press-USA TODAY NET

Congratulations to Vlad Guerrero on his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. More on that below.

Felix Pena picked a fine time to have his worst start of 2018. 6 hits + 2 walks and 7 runs, all earned, and only 1 out? 33 pitches and only 1 out? 33 pitches and 5 of those were in the strike zone and looked at. 1 was swung on and missed. 2 were swung out and fouled off. Except for 1 pitch out of the zone fouled off, and another pitch out of the zone and swung at and missed, every - single - other - pitch was a net positive for the Mariners. Every single one.

One thing you might be overlooking from yesterday is that the LAA bullpen just went 8 23 innings and gave up only 1 run off of 8 scattered hits and a pair of walks, against 3 hits. That’s good for amping up trade value just a day or so before the deadline............Mike Scioscia didn’t run out a position player to do some pitching. He has never done that. In fact, Terry Collins, Marchel Lachemann, and Joe Maddon before him didn’t do that, either. Not since Bob Rogers in 1993 has that happened in Anaheim. That was Chili Davis, who lasted 2 no-hit innings against the Rangers. His only blemish was plunking Jose Canseco in the 8th. Yeah, I’d plunk Canseco, too.

Anyway, the Angels took 2 of 3 against Seattle. After winning on Friday 4-3 on a Kol Calhoun walk-off, and then an Arcia-fueled 11-5 blow out blow-out on Saturday, they lost yesterday 8-5. Today is an off day as they travel to Tampa Bay for 3 games, then on to Cleveland for 3. They will be back next weekend to host Detroit.

Have some Wake-Up-Grumpy-Though-You-Are-Still-Over-500-HaloLinks:

A Little Bit Of Mike Trout News

How about some Trout Had a Great Weekend Porn? Mike hits his 29th home run, because Mike owns King Felix.......Mike steals his 20th base (Okay, that was before Friday).....Trout robs Kyle Seager with a glorious catch at the top of the wall.....Trout uses his speed to chase down a Mitch Hanniger deep fly at the warning track....Trout makes a nice catch catch over his shoulder the wall on a Kyle Seager line drive.....

Trout just rose past Jackie Robinson, Sal Bando, Justin Verlander and CC Sabathia in career bWAR. There are some big names coming right around the corner. And he will be in the Top 150 all-time in just a week or so..........

And, thusly, Mike Trout is heating back up...........

Have some pretty cool inside bits of Mike, both the person and the athlete.............

A Little Bit Of Angels News

Vlad Guerrero was inducted into the Baeball Hall Of Fame yesterday, and the Angels finally have a cap in the history books. One problem, though, Vlad’s cap was never that clean......He didn’t talk much, but then he always more about deeds than words, and I hope his big shit-eating grin of joy never leaves his face. For the rest of us, it’s Vladdie bobblehead night on August 10th..........And if you run across any Dodger fans between now and then, hand them a printout copy of this Vladdie-not-a-Dodger-twice...........One of Vlad’s original scouting reports.............

How about some delayed weekend shout out to Francisco Arcia, American League Rookie Of The Weekend. But thank heavens for the strategic vision of Mike Scioscia. No sense having the hottest hitter in the game one night after getting all worn out from running around all those bases. And the master strategist observes that his 2018 splits show a seriously bad weakness against a left-handed pitcher such as the Marco Gonzalez that Seattle ran out yesterday as a starter............And how about a shout out to Kole Calhoun and his first walk-off home run?..........

Albert Pujols has “knee issues”. People are impressed that he is playing fairly well. I am not ignoring that Arte will have to pay another $87 million to a guy over whom Billy Eppler will have to lose a 25-man roster slot for the 3 more years...........

Everywhere In Baseball

Sean Newcomb came within a single strike of recording a ho-hitter, against the Dodgers. Chris Taylor singled on a 2-2 pitch in the 9th. In fact, the first pitch to Taylor was a strike, but called a ball. We will never know what might have happened has Newcomb been up on Taylor 0-1 ............

(Bonus quiz: name the most recent no-hitter of the Angels franchise. You guys should get this, easily. The Indians, though, wow.)

That put Newcomb into the spotlight. And, these days, a young guy getting the spotlight launches the Social Media Justice League. Bad tweets were found. Apologies issued. MLB investigating. Here we go. You do realize, do you not, that the end game to this is for elementary school teacher to hold counseling sessions to their students on social media etiquette. Because every thing you put onto the Internet goes into your permanent record!. (Do grade school officials still use that threat?)...........

Is there an unwritten rule (hell, is there a written rule) on how players are to dress for batting practice? The Braves announcers sure think so.....Kiki Hernandez has something to day about it...........

Doug Eddings. You should know that name.....We’re not the only fans who know that name......And now the Twins, and their fans, might be joining the club of those who know how to hate a very bad, bad umpire.............

Pitch Framing is cheating? Hell to the no. The catcher can do whatever the hell he wants once he catches the ball. It’s up to the umpire to make the call based on whether the baseball did or did not cross any part of the plate before it got to the catcher. And the rule book is pretty complex and unreadable about the whole thing..........

Well, let’s see what happens now. The Nats lost. Badly. And to the Marlins. So does that mean that the Nats will now be putting their roster up for sale, after all?..........

Mike Moustakas went to the Brewers. People are still considering Moustakas “a big bat”. He has averaged 24 HR’s per season over his career. He did get 38 last year, his contract year, and he does have 20 already this season. But prior he was pretty much only half of this for the bulk of his career............

If teams are not high on Matt Harvey, maybe the reason is that the Reds are too high on Harvey’s price?...........Adam Jones really must love losing.............

Modern government in action. It’s 2018 and the State of New York finally figured out that cable companies totally suck at what they do.

The Duffle Bag

Adrian Beltre still know that baseball is a game, and having fun is the point. And Max Stassi is right there with him............But Tulo is a shortstop, don’t you know, so we know how most valuable he remains. (Over the last 7 seasons - including this one - he is averaging 81 games a year and plummeting.)..........Need a job? Love beer and brats? The Brewers are hiring a data engineer...........Yankees fans held a cellphone light vigil for Aaron Judge and his delayed march into strikeout history.............
