Series Preview: Angels @ Rays (Into August)

Angels roll into Tampa and into August during this series

MLB: Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

Angels 54-53
Rays 53-53

In May, the Angels beat the Rays 3 games to 1, scoring 22 runs in the process. The Angels have been playing much better ball (offensively) lately, but the Rays have been a mess. Over their past 5 games, the Rays have allowed 42 runs, while over their past 3 game, the Angels have scored 43 runs over their past 5 games.

Here is the Ray’s pitching depth chart (before Archer was traded):

Weather Forecast

GAME 1

Tyler Skaggs (2.62 ERA) v. Ryne Stanek (2.43 ERA)
Tuesday, July 31st @ 4:10PM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Summary:

The Last time Tyler Skaggs faced the Rays he got the loss despite given up only 1 run over 6 innings. How does that happen? Easy - the Rays beat up on the Angels bullpen and the offense doesn’t score a run until the 9th. Skaggs left the game with his team down 0-1. Let’s hope for more offense this time around.

Pitch Arsenal:

Ryne Stanek is a reliever starting this game - surprise! Welcome to the 2018 Tampa Bay Rays. Stanek has yet to face the Angels this year. In his last 2 “starts” he’s thrown 3 innings and gave up 3 runs (all to the Orioles).

Pitch Arsenal:

Verdict: Angels should have the edge with Skaggs on the mound. Also depends on who the Rays throw in after Stanek is done but pitching has not been their strong point.

GAME 2

Nick Tropeano (4.82 ERA) v. Random bullpen dude (xxx ERA)
Wednesday, August 1st @ 4:10PM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Summary:

On a positive note, it’s unlikely Nick Tropeano will give up 5 home runs in back to back games. However, Tropeano did give up 2 bombs against the Rays in 2.2 innigns back on May 18th. He’s also given up 14 total home runs in just 65 innings. Dang.

Pitch Arsenal:

Verdict: No idea who the Rays put up against Tropeano. Some reliever? Hard to predict this game it is.

GAME 3

Andrew Heaney (3.63 ERA) v. Random bullpen dude (xxx ERA)
Thursday, August 2nd @ 10:10AM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Summary:

Heaney took the loss on May 19th when he gave up ZERO earned runs but 4 runs against the Rays. He struck out 7 and walked 5 in that game. He hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in a game the entire month of July.

Pitch Arsenal:

Verdict: I’ll take the odds of Heaney versus random bullpen guy.

Overall Verdict: In a perfect word, the Angels sweep the Rays who were just swept by MLB’s worst team - the Orioles. Let’s hope they at least take 2 out of 3.
