Moments ago, word came on what we had been anticipating for weeks.
Here’s the #Ohtani news on elbow…#Angels pic.twitter.com/L81Nnxo2iN

The surgery is expected to happen some time next week and Ohtani will spend at least part of his recovery in SoCal.
Ohtani has shown himself to be quite the capable hitter AND pitcher, so having both of those tools back in 2020 will be huge for the Angels and Shoehei Ohtani who is still only 24 years old.
While Ohtani will be out all of 2019 from pitching, it’s likely he will hit at some point in the season, but it’s too soon to know if he will be ready by opening day.
There’s “too many variables” to know if Shohei Ohtani will be ready for Opening Day next season, Scioscia said. They’ll know better after he actually has the Tommy John surgery.
