Angels have a Minor problem in loss to the Rangers

Series now split at one apiece

MLB: Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Angels 2 Rangers 4

The good news is that the Angels future is shining brighter with some talented youth. The bad news is that the Angels dropped this game to the Rangers. Is a sweep really too much to ask??? Apparently it is.

David Fletcher led off this game with a double, filling in for Kole Calhoun who was getting a day off. Things got fun when Mike Trout was hit by a pitch (not the hit by a pitch part but what came next). Andrelton Simmons was up to bat when Fletcher and Trout pulled off a double steal. In fact, the Angels stole 4 bases in this game with Jabari Blash and Simmons also swiping bags.

Andrew Heaney was working it and faced only 11 batters his first 3 innings but got into trouble in the 4th, giving up a pair of home runs - followed by two more runs allowed in the 5th.

Despite an Angels loss, some fun stuff happened in this game:

  1. Four stolen bases
  2. David Fletcher with a 3 hit game
  3. Shohei Ohtani with his first HR off a lefty

Fletcher now has 14 doubles to Trout’s 21 but in only half of the games. Pretty cool stat. Shohei Ohtani now has 16 home runs and and a real shot at getting to 20 thanks to Pujols’ early exit on the season. Makes you wish he had been hitting more all along, right?

Ohtani is so cool he even returns wild pitches on his own. No catcher needed.

Some not so great stuff? The Angels left 7 runners on base and were 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position. Also, the 7/8/9 batters were 1 for 11 with 6 Ks and that surely did not help. Mike Minor gave up only 2 runs on 3 hits over his 5 innings start for the Rangers.

Let’s enjoy that Ohtani home runs one more time because it was a thing of beauty.
