All I need now is the sweet smell of freshly-mown grass, and the sounds of balls, gloves and bats. Just to sit and watch players go through warm-ups is a comfort. So, here. Old-timey color film footage of MFY Spring Training.

And on we go with Welcome-To-Camp-HaloLinks:

A Little Bit Of Angels News

Jo Adell is coming. (And, no this is NOT a repeat of yesterday’s link.).............

(h/t reddit): Ippei and Keynan go sushi hunting, and some other guy tags along..........And, since he is in the Phoenix Metro area, that other guy goes and visits his old Spring training grounds..........

Sadly, Eric Young, Jr. joined the ship in Baltimore. Like many here, I love that guy. he plays with energy and intensity and joy. He’s not a Hall of Famer, but he has his moments and is always worth watching. And he is gracious with us in parting. The Orioles come to town late July. Maybe he makes the trip so we can show him some love..........

Best burn of the day..........

Everywhere In Baseball

The big news happened yesterday morning, when Kyler Murray officially announced that the Oakland A’s have wasted their 2018 first round draft pick. For their part, the A’s are taking the high road, by whistling in the dark. I don’t know what would be more frustrating, using your coveted Top 10 pick on a guy who chooses not to play, or using the Top 10 pick on a guy who wants to play, but can’t.....The funniest moment in all this comes courtesy of Bob Nightengale. Ol’ Bob tweets that Oakland is “cautiously optimistic” that Murray will be in camp this week. And 20 seconds later Bleacher Report tweets that Murray is sticking it to Oakland.....By the way, people, don’t get all cocky. This is a bullet that almost hit us, as well. Jordyn Adams was a football prospect, too. If you know anything about college football, this list of offers should scare the shit out of you.....Now. Murray is the one who owns his life and happiness, not me. I am just left to wonder. At 5’9” and 195 pounds, Murray should grow into the bulk of a Russell Wilson. That would still make him smaller than even Baker Mayfield, and a lot smaller than Patrick Mahomes the NFL might be hoping he will become. In fact, just 2 seasons ago, Murray would have been the smallest QB in the NFL. The NFL just doesn’t like to draft guys the size of Murray to play QB. Somebody certainly will, but the long-term record of success for a guy like Murray in the QB position of the NFL are not very good, at all. Others are free to disagree..........And one perspective is that MLB has not done enough to move payroll into the hands of younger, productive, players fast enough, and Murray is proof..........

Yeah, if one assumes that ALL of the proposed MLB rule changes are serious, moving the mound back would rank last with me, too. Nobody is thinking about what such a thing would mean to infield defense. The pitcher would be a few inches further into the downward arc of a catcher’s throw to second base. The pitcher would be a few inches slower to infield bunts and fielding his position. The pitcher would few a few inches closer to collisions with SS and 2B on slow grounders up the middle. And the pitcher would be a few inches closer to the bag on pick-off throws to 2B, both eliminating one portion of the running game AND increasing the chances of errant throws at the same time...........

Congratulations, Panama! Rod Carew must be ecstatic..........

Here is all you need to know about player projections..........

Derek Jeter and team dump (almost) all their top talent - all of which are in their prime years - and replace them with, well, replacement players. And still Jeter expects them to win as though they are Yelich and Realmuto and Stanton and Ozuna, etc. I think this Jeter guy never did understand WAR...........It’s important to remember as the Marlins echo the words of the Astros back in 2012, the bottom line is all about the bottom line. Jeter and the Marlins’ ownership team is totally happy to dump bucket loads of player payroll right back into their pockets, as they move from star players to scrubs for a few years. But they are not dropping ticket prices and food and beverage prices and TV contract prices and ad prices as they force everyone to stick around and hope that their prospects eventually pan out (before demanding higher payroll). it’s a cynical money-making grab made by guys who have not proven themselves to be as smart as a Theo Epstein or Jeff Luhnow. In other words: Florida.........

Sheryl Ring picks up her series on fixing the arbitration system. Today’s installment (which is the concluding article): restricted free agency. I read through it and cannot help but wonder how this process might have forced the two sides of Trout and Moreno to the table to work out a longer-term contract already, which would have been far more satisfying to the LAA fan base. Oh, sure, you don’t think we matter. But just watch how much we matter at the gate in 2021 if Arte loses Trout..........

This week FanGraphs is opening up their crystal ball, and looking deep into our MLB Draft futures. The first article is “Updating the 2019, 2020, and 2021 Draft Rankings”, which reminds us that the Diamondbacks huge load of picks also comes with a huge amount of pool money with which they get to play......The second article is “Junior Colleges Have Become Scouting’s Most Active Battleground”. This is talent that sits smack in the middle between proven and stable college talent, and raw high school potential..........

Someday, when I grow up and become old, I want to look back and say that I lived a baseball life, too..........

Hot Stove

Hey, Justin Verlander (and, no, we don’t still have 100 guys unsigned), have you called on HarpChado and verified that they are ignoring a $300 million deal from the Nationals, and a $220 million deal from the Yankees, and a $250 million deal from the White Sox? Are you the guy who wants to pay a 30-year old Dallas Keuchel coming off a 2.6 bWAR season to a 7-year, $210 million deal? If you think this a thing that only baseball players understand and we fans are ignorant fools who should just pay, sit down and shut up, why don’t you give Derek Jeter a call and ask him his thoughts?..............

Nah, of Nolan Arenado signs an extension with the Rockies, the MLB Front Offices will be impacted next Free Agent season, but by then all the media observers will have forgotten and will be blaming baseball collusion for the warped FA signing results..........

The Oakland Bay bridge was busy yesterday. Catcher Nick Hundley moving from the Giants to the A’s, and catcher Stephen Vogt moved from the A’s to the Giants..........

The Duffle Bag

150 years in the making, the Reds are going crazy with throwbacks this season..............ha ha! Wouldn’t it be brilliant to mic up the umpire crew as they chat with New York about an Instant Replay review? What?? Transparency and accountability withe fans by baseball officials? What heresy!!..........Good catch, Sam Miller. Garth was willing to get into camp on time..........
