The Angels win the first 6 innings, lose the last 3. And another game.

That was fun for a while. A 5-0 lead and a great game out of Andrelton Simmons, power AND baseball smarts. A 3-run home run by Kole Calhoun as pretty nostalgic.

Cam Bedrosian was the Opener, ,meaning that Felix Pena would be targeted to last through the 6th inning. That was the very inning he finally surrendered, giving up a pair of runs.

Luis Garcia took over in the 7th. Walk, single, walk, walk, hello Ty Buttrey. Add a sac fly and an infield base hit and the 5-run lead was gone. For good. (I know there was a lot of harping about the plate umpire when Garcia was pitching last night, but the ump only missed one call.)

9th inning. Out + out = 2 outs. Base hit. then 1 ball and 2 strikes on the next batter and we get a stolen base, putting the go-ahead run in scoring position. Buttrey can’t get that last strike. Base hit. run scores. Angels go quietly in the 9th inning. Sure, Mike Trout was on deck then, but Mike went a very miserable 0 for 3 with a walk and a K. Mike don’t have much magic right now.

Angels lose 6-5. That’s 10 losses in their last 12 games. 1 and 6 on this home stand. The Yankees go for the 4-game sweep tonight. First pitch at 6:07.

Factoid to ponder: before Trout hurt himself and took some games off, he was batting .406/.592/.938 with an OPS of 1.529. Since coming back, he has been .250/.462/.429 with an OPS of .890. So as we have seen in past years, the trick to humanizing Mike’s season is for him to get hurt and watch him lose a month of games while we wait for him to restore brilliance.

It’s probably just me, but watching Angels games on TV makes me think that the producer is heir to the late Chris Farley. “Remember that time when that guy came to bat and he hit that ball and...and...and...it went real far? Heh....yeah....uh.......that was awesome...” Highlights are one thing, but showing what every guy did some other time on the implication that he could do that very thing this at-bat, over and over and over, is driving me further insane. It’s laying waste to all the money I spend on therapy.

A Little Bit Of Angels News

Cody ‘Closer’ Allen ain’t our Closer no more. Yet one more roll of the dice that only works for those putting their chips on the No Pass line.............

The roto fans are the first to jump off the Cody Allen ship. Roto fans don’t have to worry about pride or appearances.........

Buster Olney is lost among the twits trying to explain Mike Trout as The Velociraptor...........

Speaking of Olney, he wants to pimp Manny Machado, which is cool and all, but take a look at his chart and notice who is tied for 3rd in all of MLB for Defensive Runs Saved?............

Hell yeah I would pitch to Mike Trout. Always. Why? Because baseball is fun as hell and nothing makes it more fun than getting to watch Trout do Trout things. It’s why we are all here in the first place. So let’s watch history instead of ducking it. It’s not like I am trying to counter-balance some cheater or anything...........

Leave it to Forbes to break the latest news. Shohei Ohtani is listed right there on BBR for all to see that he “...is expected to be sidelined until the beginning of June.”...Over on the official MLB injury report for LAA, Ohtani is listed as due back “Possibly early May”. Those have been there for months now. But here comes Barry Bloom of Forbes with Shohei Ohtani Update: Japanese Two-Way Star Won’t Hit For Los Angeles Angels In April. Seeing shit like that is the only kind of thing that makes me think I am underpaid around here..........

LHP Sam Freeman signing on Tuesday is the very thing that puts us into the record books......This is a dubious record that the Halos will break very soon......Especially since Freeman didn’t stick for even 24 hours.....It only happens to a franchise blown up by injuries not for a single year, but year after year after year after..........

Everywhere In Baseball

If a Gio Gonzalez is good for patching up a Brewers starting rotation that ranks 27th in baseball, and he costs only $2MM plus incentives, at what price would a Gio Gonzalez be good to patch up an LAA starting rotation that ranks a very distant 29th, barely ahead of the last place Orioles? Just asking for a friend...............(According to FanGraphs, since we don’t have even a 5% chance of making the 2019 playoffs, we are invisible. Unworthy of Gio consideration.)..........

It’s not lost on me that as soon as the pixie dust had worn off on the Mariners - having lost 8 of their last 11 games - Trader Jerry felt freed up to resume his old habits and saw his chance to make a trade. He acquired Mike Wright, the worst pitcher on the worst staff in MLB. But in Jerry’s world, any trade is better than no trading at all. These first few weeks must have been hell for him.........

Finally. Here comes Baby Vlad. All of MLB is going gaga. Remember his lineage. Thank you, Jerry..........

This is ass-backwards. In reviewing the reasons why Dallas Keuchel remains unsigned, his extremely high contract demands are mentioned last. And the draft-pick compensation is almost left out completely. I do find the segment about how laptop evaluators are devaluing his skill set to be intriguing. Stupid, if true...........

Break the barriers, ladies. Now be good at what you do..........

Jordan Hicks is pitching at Warp 2. I am going to be interested in watching how long the health of his arm holds out..........

We kinda knew to be on the lookout for some attitude in the Phillies-Mets game last night. The series just started. Look for more.........

We can sit and harp pn Zack Cozart all day long. But Cozart has never dropped 125 OPS+ points like Jose Ramirez of the Indians has just done..........(Cozart is only down 103 OPS+ points, from a crappy 81 last year to a NEGATIVE 22 now. I didn’t even know that OPS+ calculations went into negative digits.)...........

This is great. Angel Hernandez had himself another shitty night behind the plate.....But thanks to reddit, we have an even better moment, this one involving first Hernandez and then the whole crew. Carlos Correa flinches and instinctively reaches and grabs a live ball. Hernandez missed something that happened right in front of him (watch it again and notice how Hernandez’ head goes wandering off at the key moment). But then Hernandez needed Twins manager Rocco Baldelli to explain to him the rule book, and then whole crew took another 2 minutes to figure out such a simple thing...........

The first Tommy John Surgery occurred 45 years ago, back in 1974. Tens of thousands of people have undergone that surgery since, baseball players of all ages. In all that time the most colloquial phrase for the procedure has been, yes, “Tommy John Surgery”. Mirriam-Webster will be formally acknowledging this language come Monday. 25 years after anybody but libraries stopped buying their publication.........

Baseball teams have long had kangaroo courts, where players fine one another lunch money for doing stupid things during games (Justin Bour must have an empty wallet right now). Look inside these courts from some change-of-pace smiles. (You might also notice that only long-retired players talk about such things.).........

The Duffle Bag

Coming to a baseball stadium near you: a prescription for what ails...............Great reddit find of an even greater college play-by-play announcer. No pressure, Victor..........This, boys and girls, is precisely how you beat the shift. Exact same result as a bloop single to the outfield...........”I don’t want no stupid-ass Orioles baseball! I’m a White Sox fan, dammit!!” (Actually, my guess is that the kid is kinda pissed that the adult intercepted a ball meant for him in the first place...........Ultimate trick shot..........Eric Byrnes needs to be shown the memo that, for guys, speed while playing with little balls is not known to be such a good thing..........Counterfeit championship sports rings seized by Customs agents coming from China. And dozens of wealthy idiots have been saved from doing something stupid with money they don’t feel they need to hang onto.....Because there ARE such people out there.........When your 3B coach has the wrong scouting report on the opposing LF..........
