MLB: Los Angeles Angels-Media Day Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Tonight is an MLB showcase event. Griffin Canning - a potential MLB pitching star who apparently chooses Wendy’s over In’N’Out or Five Guys - makes his MLB debut against Vlad Guerrero, Jr. - a highly probable MLB position player star who is appearing in only his 4th MLB game, and making his first showing in a ballpark and against a team which belongs to the cap his dad is wearing in the Hall of Fame.

Oh, what might have been. Instead, the clock has almost run out on Jerry’s guy.............

On the other hand, it’s the first game of a series which is theoretically winnable, but the Blue Jays are playing well, 7-3 over their last 10 games. And Shohei Ohtani is not yet back (but his party ill still be this week). We are going to need all the Tommy La Stella we can muster.

And you can muster up these Showcase-HaloLinks:

A Little Bit Of Angels News

Yeah, Luis Rengifo is refreshing. At least the first two games. It’s only been 4 games, though. We should probably be patient. Yeah. I’ll do that...........

Mike Trout is on the verge of joining some good franchise company. Like, for example, Spike Owen?...........

Hey, Gubi, you do know that I am already out here reading FanGraphs for you all day, already, right? Just come to HH and catch the important stuff. It sounds like it will save your marriage one day................

Y’all are aware of this by now. Albert Pujols now ranks 3rd, or 5th, on the career RBI list. 3rd because Elias Sports Bureau notes that the stat of RBI did not exist prior to 1920. 5th because BBR recognizes box scores from games prior to 1920, and knows how to count Runs Batted In. And 25% of baseball fans today insist that RBI is a fairy tale and simply don’t care. Based on that, I would say that Elias is in the minority..............

Hansel Robles must be enjoying the NHL playoffs...........

Weekly Mike Trout Career WAR Perp Walk. Mike remains slowed. This is our normal. Mike gets hurt in any form or fashion and it takes a month to get back up to speed. This past week he as actually outpaced by Andrelton Simmons, 0.4 fWAR to 0.3. Seriously. Trout’s slash line last week was a meager .240/.424/.280. But over on BBR he keeps climbing the career leaderboard. Pee Wee Reese, Buddy Bell, Duke Snider, Joe Cronin and Tony Mullane are now permanently in his rear-view mirror. He is tied with Zack Greinke, so maybe these two bounce back and forth a little bit as Greinke does well and Trout slowly returns to his normal self. We will continue to read very famous names on this list, but coming up soon is Ernie Banks..........

Everywhere In Baseball

Even with the arrival of Griffin Canning, it’s also It’s Thank You Jerry Day in Anaheim..........Baseball’s New Crown Prince has arrived............Brett Anderson is the first MLB pitcher to have faced both Vlad Senior and Vlad Junior..........Even camera operators are hyped............

This is pretty testy. The Cubs certainly expected that the return of Addison Russell would bring an avalanche of hard questions, directed both at Russell and at the Cubs. Clearly, they have a strong desire to plug their heads in the sand and force everyone to pretend that Russell’s domestic violence suspension erased all concerns. To make sure that this is how the media behaves, the Cubs are secretly going around and threatening reporters to follow the planned party line...or else...........In this take on the story, there is strong push back from the reporters who already have deep inside relations with the Cubs. But as one on-the-fringe-reporter notes, “the media guys who get the best access are the ones that don’t have to be told explicitly that they need to do positive coverage”............

The Kris Bryant who was once terrorizing MLB may be back. You probably failed to even realize that he had gone quiet, but he sure had. It’s one of the great things about Trout, except for his injury dips his healthy playing production is amazingly consistent............

Ervin Santana has turned himself into a Free Agent. The end is near for Ervin. Maybe an international contract?............

The MLB test ban treaty on shifts is now active in the Atlantic League, and it’s off to a rocky start.............

(h/t reddit) Home Run celebrations are becoming big business in Japan. It’s merely a matter of time............

Jean Segura, having been sent off from the Mariners to the Phillies as part of Trader Jerry’s urgent need to rebuild his Seattle farm, was finally set to rejoin the team after clearing his IL tests. In his first game back he tripled, which was just the offensive spark that the Phillies had been lacking. And then he got bit by the bad luck bug again, taking a pitch off of his own helmet and being forced off the field............

I dunno. I am an old guy, so I have some serious old school in my veins. I love bunting, when the guy bunting knows what the hell he is doing. I just guess that position players practice bunting about as frequent as pitchers practice batting............

Lots of guys are having rough Aprils. But some names are surprising. Ian Kinsler among them...........

Tim Anderson is back from suspension...and right back to flipping celebratory bats..............And he ain’t gonna stop............

This is very cool. I was not even aware that MLB had such a thing as the Girls Baseball Trailblazer Series. Had I know, I might have ventured up to Compton to watch...........

A day in the life of an MLB bat boy. Because you actually never knew all this before...........

via UniWatch, we have a photo essay of the African teams competing in pre-qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games............

Sweet review of the current status of private sports enterprises continuing to seek State and/or Federal avenues to force public gambling services to hand over public money............

Looks like Victor and Gubi will be working for Sinclair Broadcast Group. Although they may rope Amazon in to help with the purchase...............

The Duffle Bag

ARod wears a glove to games?..........Ryan LaMarre’s mom is intense...........Losing your beer onto an opposing outfielder IS pretty funny, with humorous player responses all around. But that guy losing his beer was way close to fan interference AND he lost a perfectly good beer. Nothing to celebrate there...........This sounds as though the location of this Little League field is in a flood plain. Maybe they should rebuild elsewhere?...........Doh! Cards pitcher Alex Reyes being an idiot. Pitchers punching walls are all idiots..........Put us in, coach, we’re ready to play!...............I wanna see these of Mike Trout. Somebody get on it............MiLB Rocky Mountain Vibes mascot is...uh...a S’mores?...........The biggest misconception of baseball I had when I was young? “Tie goes to the runner”...........Kelvin Gutierrez is playing baseball, because he is on a mission from God...........I might not like the Dodgers, but that ain’t Charlie Kershaw’s fault...........
