When MLB serves up a Royal buffet, it’s a bad time to diet.

MLB: Kansas City Royals at Los Angeles Angels Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Well, dang. Losing a chance to sweep the Royals and instead enjoying a “serviceable” 5-1 loss is less than fulfilling. Serviceable, I guess, if we want to ignore the 3-run 3rd inning. Serviceable, alternatively, if we consider that the Angels were only going to score 1 run anyway in yet another struggle against a left-handed pitcher.

Three more games against Minnesota before 10 games within the underbelly of our own division. Actually 16, but in the middle there shall be that make-up detour from Seattle on a Sunday evening to play an afternoon game in Chicago on the Monday, so they can fly out of Chicago late Monday afternoon and get back to Anaheim to play Oakland Tuesday night. We then finish out the AL West stretch.

We better do well through this, because right after that it’s Dodgers, Rays, Blue Jays, Cards.

Skipper Brad is rolling out Taylor Cole as the Opener tonight. Felix Pena has next. Pena went 5 innings versus the Twins last week (Tuesday) when Cam Bedrosian was the Opener. In that game, Cole mopped up the last 2 innings of a 4-3 loss. The 4 runs were given up by Bedrosian (1) and Pena (3).

A Little Bit Of Angels News

The Dodgers had this great idea. Let’s tear down one of the growing number of eye-sore abandoned shopping malls and replace it with a Minor League ballpark. Right here in the San Fernando Valley. What a cool civic idea! Who could possibly object? Why, well, Arte Moreno for one. It turns out that because the Angels are co-owners of the LA/OC/SB/Riverside territory, the Dodgers need permission from the Angels to bring in a new member of their franchise. The LA Times would like to emphasize the notion that the Angels blocked the Dodgers from doing something cool. The important point in the article, though, is that the Angels would have been fine with it if the Dodgers would agree not to block the Angels from doing something of the same sort. The Dodgers said no. They wanted to reserve the right to shit on Arte, but wanted Arte to do them a solid for the favor..............

Justin Upton and his boo boo toe are now updated to be off the field until nearly July. So the only real fun with Upton 2019 is to take bets on whether or not he will make it back before game 81, and the end of half #1?.............

J.C. Ramirez spending his rehab time doing good deeds from Tempe, working to prevent PEDs use among teenagers trying to get into the game.............

Shohei Ohtani was warming up nicely. A nice 2-run homer over the weekend, however, was 1 of only 3 hits he has had in his last 4 games............

We DID get a massively cool start out of Griffin Canning on Saturday. He gave up only 3 hits and a walk, 0 runs, over 7 innings and 93 pitches. He had a perfect game through his first 4 innings............

Somebody misplaced Jared Walsh’s first hit baseball.............

Mike Trout has his power back. That was his career home run #250. Now he just needs to regain his regularity. Spending the weekend going 5 for 9 with 3 walks, a home run and a double is a good start..............

Weekly Mike Trout Career WAR Perp Walk. This past week Mike caught nobody. But he is right on the verge of catching Ernie Banks................

Everywhere In Baseball

Remember J.B. Shuck? He was signed as a Free Agent out of Houston after the 2012 season and then sod off to Cleveland late in the 2014 seasons. 151 games in between. He has moved on to White Sox, the Marlins and now the Pirates. The Pirates are trying to figure out a way to gain value out of Shuck and two-way players are the new wave. So, why not? Let’s see if we can make J.B. into a two-way player..............

Joe Maddon is turning into Grumpy Old Man. He got bit by an illegal windup, so he wanted to bite back and Sean Doolittle was close enough. He protested the game, caused a ruckus, most likely got bitch-slapped by cooler heads post-game, and the Cubs chose not to formally file a protest...........

Curiously, there is a lot of attention being paid to the ignominy of the 2019 Marlins. “The Marlins are even worse than we thought”.....”The Marlins are still being haunted by their last regime”......”The Marlins Are Bad Enough to Have a Shot at History”......”The 2019 Marlins are one of the worst power-hitting teams ever”.....If nothing else, the Marlins can read. And they promptly went about sweeping the Mets...............

Getting swept by the Marlins was not the worst thing going on with the Mets over the weekend. That would be Robinson Cano..........Post-series, Cano was blaming everything else. Yesterday he blamed the way the umpire was making the call on the ball.....The game before he blamed it on the scoreboard.............And now people are noticing that Cano is batting a mere .217 this month............

Because the owners are fat and happy, and the players are led by Tony Clark, the fact that the clock is ticking away on a current CBA that will need to be heavily modified to prevent either a strike or a lockout, does not seem to be encouraging either side to get a head start on things.............

A great piece on UniWatch focusing on the great sports artist Jack Davis. For most of you, once you scroll far enough down to the movie poster art for “The Bad News Bears” you will totally get it.............

Interesting thought: the MLB has screwed up by waiting for some right time to expand. I would counter that not enough gravity is being given to the problem of not enough MLB-quality talent to support broad expansion. You cannot expand by just one team, or two. You need balanced divisions and balanced leagues for balanced schedules, and consider geography. No other North American sport plays as many contests, nor requires as many athletes (including the full pipeline down through the entire farm systems)............

Imagine being a Little League coach, a volunteer job remember, and having the task of walking their field before every game so that you can collect all the hypodermic needles from drug users the night before - 20 to 30 at a time. That’s what goes on in New Mexico now..............

The Duffle Bag

“Go ahead, old man! I double-dog dare you to RUN!”...........Remember Tim ‘Below Mendoza’ Tebow?.....He grabbed his first AAA Home Run.............Minor League Baseball has Unwritten Rules, too. That book includes a rule against doing push-ups at second base............(h/t UniWatch) German cap in Japan is proud to wear the cap of the AL East Baltimore Ducks.............When you get taken down, show some respect............
