Series Preview: Rangers @ Angels (Chance to get even?)

New, 26 comments

Angels are 2-4 against the Rangers so far this year

MLB: Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers Jim Cowsert-USA TODAY Sports

Rangers (24-23) @ Angels (22-27)

Seems like only yesterday the Angels were sitting one game under .500. That day is more of a distant memory after the trouncing the Angels receiving by the Twins.

The last time these two teams met, the Rangers swept the Angels - but the Angels won their first series 2 games to 1 in earlier last month, so taking 2 games here could even up the season series.

The Rangers find themselves in 2nd place in the AL West after winning their last 3 series and sweeping the Mariners earlier in the week. Don’t expect them to go down easy this weekend.

Also, in case you are interested, you can watch this game on ESPN+. Neat huh?

Weather Forecast

GAME 1

(R) Griffin Canning (3.80 ERA) v. (L) Drew Smyly (6.51 ERA)
Friday, May 24th @ 7:07PM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Notable Stats

Angels Summary:

Griffin Canning certainly seems here to stay in the Angels rotation after 4 starts. He had his best showing yet last time out against the Royals throwing 7 innings of shutout ball while allowing only 3 hits and 1 walk.

Pitch Data:

Rangers Summary:

Have no fear! Drew Smyly is one lefty the Angels have maybe figured out. The Angels beat Smyly back on April 6th, knocking him out before he even finished the 4th inning. Smyly has allowed 4 runs in 4 of his 7 starts and has only made it into through the 5th inning once this season.

Pitch Data:

GAME 2

(L) Tyler Skaggs (5.01 ERA) v. (L) Mike Minor (2.64 ERA)
Saturday, May 25th @ 7:07PM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Notable Stats

Angels Summary:

I believe in Tyler Skaggs. I believe he will throw around 100 pitches and I believe he’ll last 5-6 innings before his inevitably oversized pitch count forces him out of the game. Unfortunately, Skaggs has not had a strong May, putting up a 6.82 ERA after he pitched to a 3.15 ERA in April. Skaggs’ best outing of 2019 was against the Rangers which will hopefully bode well here.

Pitch Data:

Rangers Summary:

While you blinked, 31 year old Mike Minor has amassed a 3.2 bWAR and 2.64 ERA on the season. Or maybe you HAVE noticed how good Minor has been since he decimated the Angels back on April 16th with a complete game shutout. Minor is coming off an 11 K 6 inning performance agains the Mariners earlier in the week.

Pitch Data:

GAME 3

TBD v. (R) Ariel Jurado (2.08 ERA)
Sunday, May 26th @ 1:07PM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Notable Stats

Rangers Summary:

Sunday will mark Jurado’s second start of 2019, although he has appeared in 10 games. His 2.08 ERA is a bit deceptive given that it has been mostly relief work. In his sole start of 2019 last week, he allowed 2 ER on 5 hits over 4.1 innings. It’s like he doesn’t hit a pitch count much higher than 80.

Pitch Data:

Overall Verdict: Games 1 and 3 look to be be the best shot for the Angels and they have a real chance at pulling off a much needed series victory. You can pretty much write off game 2 though unless Baseball decided to be crazy that day - sorry Skaggs.
