Griffin Canning pitched well, Angels defense didn’t cooperate

Buttercup the song is gone, Buttercup the reality is not

MLB: Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

Angels 3 Rangers 4

Griffin Canning showed once again that is ready for the Big Leagues. It may have taken him 95 pitches to get through 5 innings, but Canning allowed only 3 hits and 1 run (a 1st inning leadoff homer) and he struck out 5.

The Angels offense backed him - sort of. Putting up 3 runs in the 2nd thanks to Jonathan Lucroy and Brian Goodwin homers but it was sadly all they could muster. It would have been enough too, if not for (see below)...

Justin Anderson relieved Canning and looked pretty shaky. He threw 27 pitches to get through his inning and gave up a run in the process.

Enter Cam Bedrosian who you actually can’t blame for this loss. His inning when like this:

Zach Cozart Error

Cam Bedrosian (Umpire) walk - see below on what should have been strike 3 instead of ball 4:

Ground out to Luis Rengifo that probably should have been a double play

Hunter Pence single + Mike Trout error that allowed an extra run to score (Trout’s first error since 2017)

Joey Gallo pop up

Asdrúbal Cabrerra K

Finally out of the inning but the damage was done.

No point in a blame of the game poll tonight. It was pretty clear the error filled 7th inning did the Angels in. Buttercup is alive and well.
