Series Preview: Angels @ A’s (On the Road Again)

Angels are hitting the road for the next 7 days

MLB: Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics D. Ross Cameron-USA TODAY Sports

Angels (24-28) @ A’s (28-25)

The Angels are coming off back to back wins after dropping their previous 5 games. Meanwhile, the A’s are riding a 9 game winning streak. It’s been a while since these two teams faced off - all the way back to the season opening series which was also in Oakland.

Looking for some mojo against a hot streaking team? Yeah, the Angels have their work cut out for them in this series. At least they don’t face any lefties, but they do face some tough Oakland pitching.

Starters haven’t been named for the Angels in games 2 and 3 yet, but it’s possible Nick Tropeano could start since he was supposed to start for the Bees on Sunday an was skipped.

A’s - who’s hot (last 7 days):

MUCH of the A’s offense has been hot lately. See exhibit A below:

Weather Forecast

GAME 1

(R) Trevor Cahill (6.43 ERA) v. (R) Chris Bassitt (2.48 ERA)
Monday, May 27th @ 1:07PM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Notable Stats

Angels Summary:

Trevor Cahill had a pleasantly surprising solid start against the Twins last week, allowing just 1 run and 2 hits over 5 innings. He’s already faced the A’s once this year and in that game he served up 2 homers and 4 runs over 6 innings.

Pitch Data:

A’s Summary:

Chris Bassitt hasn’t been great against the Angels in the past, but he’s having a solid season so far and this will be the first time he faces the Angels in 2019. Over his 6 starts, Bassitt hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in any of them.

Pitch Data:

GAME 2

TBD v. (R) Frankie Montas (2.40 ERA)
Tuesday, May 28th @ 7:07PM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Notable Stats

Angels Summary:

TBD

A’s Summary:

Frankie Montas has one of the best ERAs in the AL this year and pretty solid 1.133 WHIP as well. Like Bassitt, he hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in any of his starts and back on March 31st he held the Angels to just 3 hits and a run (Kole Calhoun homer) over 6 innings.

Pitch Data:

GAME 3

TBD v. (R) Daniel Mengden (3.31 ERA)
Wednesday, May 29th @ 12:37PM

Pitcher vs. Batters

Notable Stats

Angels Summary:

TBD

A’s Summary:

After starting the season in AAA, Mengden will be making his 4th start for the A’s in 2019. The Angels hit Mengden well last year with 10 hits over 15.1 innings in 3 starts.

Pitch Data:

Overall Verdict: Game 3 is probably the best shot for Angels win unless they surprise a pull off a victory in games 1 or 2. I think it’s realistic they could drop a pair in this series but should walk away with at least one win and with that win will end Oakland’s long winning streak.
