We don’t know if or when there will be a 2020 Major League Baseball season, but that doesn’t mean we can’t bet on how we think certain teams will do. Given so many variables as to the length of the season, betting on win totals doesn’t make a lot of sense, but now we can bet on win percentage instead.
The folks at SportsBetting.ag unveiled over/under amounts on winning percentages on Monday, avoiding the usual requirement for win total bets that a season last at least 161 games.
The Angels’ over/under is .530, which translates to 86 wins over 162 games. That seems to be better odds than in a full season, which makes some sense given that given the time off and the later date of any sort of a 2020 season, injured pitchers Shohei Ohtani and Griffin Canning have more time to recover and could participate in a larger percentage of the season than had things started in March.
For what it’s worth, PECOTA projections at Baseball Prospectus have the Angels going 85.7-76.3 over a full season, which at a .529 win percentage is right online with the over/under, while FanGraphs projects the Angels to go 83-79.
The Astros are still the clear favorite in the American League West, and the A’s have an over/under win percentage higher than the Angels.
2020 American League West over/unders
Team | Win% over/under | 162-game equivalent |
---|---|---|
Team | Win% over/under | 162-game equivalent |
Astros | 0.585 | 95-67 |

Angels | 0.530 | 86-76 |
Rangers | 0.490 | 79-83 |
Mariners | 0.415 | 67-95 |
As for the wild card race, the Angels’ over/under is the seventh highest winning percentage in the American League, putting them in a fight with the A’s, Yankees, Indians, White Sox, and Red Sox for a wild card spot, if regular playoff rules are in used.
