Halos looking to end the series with a win and an off day tomorrow + September call-ups

MLB: New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Last night’s exciting win has added to the Angels current 3 game winning streak putting them just a game under .500 at 66-67 and 8.5 games back of the second Wild Card spot. Capped by a Walsh 3 run HR, impressive bullpen performances from Iglesias, Herget, and Petricka, and Ohtani stealing home base:

On the mound tonight for the Angels is Packy Naughton (0-0, 1.68 ERA) who will be making his first career MLB start. He’s previously pitched against the Padres and Dodgers going 5.1 IP allowing 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO, and a 1.50 WHIP.

Gerrit Cole (13-6, 2.80 ERA) will be taking the mound for the Yankees as they try to avoid being swept and maintain their two game lead in the AL Wild Card race. Cole is in the running for the AL Cy Young award along with Robbie Ray and Lance Lynn (Shohei Ohtani will also likely end up with some votes as well).

Cole has 148.0 IP with 200 SO and a .99 WHIP. He was on the COVID list from August 3-16 but has since rejoined the rotation. Here’s the lineup that will be taking on Cole:

The Angels have officially won the season series against the Yankees (4-2) and tonight, the last time they face New York this season, they could improve to 5-2.

Today also marks September call-ups and the Angels made the following moves:

One of the most notable names that has not been moved is Michael Stefanic who in 76 games with Triple A SLC has slashed .337/.412/.517 with an OPS of .929. In the Triple-A West league he currently has the third highest OBP, is fifth in hits with 97, and eleventh in OPS.

Angels News and Notes:

  • Shohei Ohtani threw a bullpen today and his next start is scheduled for Friday against the Rangers. He was originally supposed to start Tuesday (Aug 31) but had it pushed after being hit on his wrist by a pitch on Saturday.
  • Joe Maddon said that Reid Detmers, Jose Marte, and Austin Warren still have not rejoined the team. Jose Marte is still in Williamsport, PA and has been quarantining for nearly two weeks. Warren and Detmers are in Baltimore and Maddon said that they are all doing well. All three of them are on the IL with no designation from the Angels COVID issues from last week
  • The Angels roster is now at 28
