Matt Olson sent the Angels to their 7th straight Opening Day loss

Friday saw a series of firsts in Oakland. The Angels and A’s gave us the first extra-inning game of the season, which gave us the first instance of a free runner on second base, and we saw Joe Maddon deploy his first five-man infield of the year.

But in the end, the result was all-too familiar. Matt Olson hit a walk-off grand slam on the first pitch from lefty reliever Hoby Milner, giving the A’s a 7-3 win, giving the Angels their seventh consecutive Opening Day loss.

The last four of those Opening Day losses came in Oakland.

Buying extra time

Two outs from a seventh consecutive Opening Day defeat, Jason Castro took Liam Hendriks deep to tie things up, eliciting an F-bomb from the A’s closer:

Castro was one of 15 major league catchers with a .200 or better isolated power (minimum 200 plate appearances) last year, so perhaps it was fitting he hit the first Angels home run of the season.

The Halos rallied with a single and walk off Hendriks after Castro’s homer, then with two outs Oakland intentionally walked Mike Trout to load the bases. The gambit paid off when Hendriks struck out Shohei Ohtani on three pitches to end the threat.

Ohtani then made history in the top of the 10th when, as the last batter of the previous inning, he was the runner on second base to start an extra inning, the first time this new 2020 rule was implemented. Ohtani’s reaction to getting the call was funny.

Ohtani was erased on an excellent play by Olson (and incredible scoop by Chapman at third), but the Angels still managed to load the bases in the 10th, only to strand everyone.

The Angels on the night were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 12 on base.

“We did have tremendous opportunity to win it late, and feel good about that,” Maddon said after the game. “A couple missed opportunities, but a pretty good first game.”

2013 was the last time the Angels won on Opening Day, a 3-1 win in 13 innings in Cincinnati.

Chappie giveth, Chappie taketh

The Angels got a late lead thanks to the rarest of occurrences, a throwing error by Matt Chapman in the top of the seventh. His errant throw put Andrelton Simmons, then a pair of fly balls got him home, giving the Angels a 2-1 advantage.

Trouble came in the eighth against Ty Buttrey, who walked Marcus Semien with one out. Ramon Laureano, who homered earlier, doubled to right field to tie the game. Chapman then atoned for his error with a triple off the wall in right, giving Oakland their first lead of the night.

Building up

With a three-week summer camp after over three months off, the early season is bound to have some relatively short starts. That was the case for both starting pitchers on Friday, even with both of them effective.

We knew Andrew Heaney was going to be limited after he skipped his final summer camp tune-up with back stiffness on Saturday. He was pulled after 67 pitches, but was quite sharp, with six strikeouts and no walks in 4⅓ innings.

He retired his first 10 batters faced until Laureano clobbered a home run to left field in the fourth inning. That was one of only two hits Heaney allowed on the night.

Heaney’s night somewhat mirrored his 2019, when opposing batters hit just .209/.272/.304 for his first time through the lineup, then .259/.321/.490 the second time through. On Friday night in Oakland, Heaney faced 16 batters:

1st time through: 0-for-9, 3 strikeouts, 41 pitches

2nd time through: 2-for-7, home run, 3 strikeouts, 26 pitches

Heaney left with two outs and a runner on first base in the fifth, and played to the “crowd” of cutouts on his walk back to the dugout.

A’s starter Frankie Montas struck out five in his four innings, but they made him work, with a 28-pitch first inning and 25 more pitches in the fourth. The Angels tallied seven three-ball counts against him and walked three times, and Mike Trout was hit by a pitch.

After leaving the bases loaded in the first, they finally broke through in the fourth with two walks followed by an RBI single from Brian Goodwin, on a 3-1 count.

Pujols a fixture on Opening Day; Rendon out of Angels lineup, as expected

Albert Pujols is at first base for the Angels, batting sixth on Friday night in the first game of the season against the Athletics at the Oakland Coliseum.

It’s the 20th consecutive Opening Day start for Pujols, just the 17th player in major league history to start at least 20 Opening Days. Pete Rose is tops with 23.

Thirteen of the other 16 such players are in the Hall of Fame. Only Rose, Barry Bonds, and Gary Sheffield are not.

Per the Angels, Pujols is just the fifth player to make 20 Opening Day starts in his first 20 seasons, along with Rose, Carl Yastrzemski, Eddie Murray, and Frank Robinson.

“As a manager, I’ve had the opportunity to really work with some outstanding players. This is a first ballot Hall of Famer, probably a unanimous first ballot Hall of Famer. The numbers he’s put up are extraterrestrial kind of numbers,” manager Joe Maddon said on a pregame conference call from Oakland. “I feel very fortunate to be in this position right now [to write Pujols’ name into the lineup].”

Pujols has, unsurprisingly, done quite well on Opening Day, hitting .294/.417/.588 with five home runs and 15 runs batted in. But those first-day numbers are split like his career totals are, though to the extreme. With St. Louis, Pujols hit .415 (17-for-41) in 12 Opening Days, with four home runs.

He’s just 3-for-27 (.111) in eight previous Opening Days with the Angels, though one of those hits was a home run two years ago here in Oakland.

Pujols is 3-for-7 (.429) in his career against A’s starter Frankie Montas.

Rendon out

As expected, third baseman Anthony Rendon isn’t starting on Friday for the Angels, still dealing with the sore oblique. But he remains on the active roster for now, which suggests the team believes he’ll be ready to return within a week.

David Fletcher gets the start at third base in this one, leading off. He started 74 games at the position last season.

Shohei Ohtani bats third at designated hitter for the Angels. He’s 3-for-6 with a home run against Montas. The only other Angel with a homer against Montas is Taylor Ward, who’s 2-for-2 against him. Ward isn’t starting but he did make the Halos’ Opening Day roster.

Trout sending out travel tweets is the surest sign of normalcy in a year that has been anything but normal.

In 75 career road games against the A’s, Trout is hitting .280/.370/.549, which qualifies the Oakland Coliseum as one of his toughest parks. He also has 18 home runs there, his second-most in any road park, behind only Seattle.

Trout doesn’t have a home run in 12 career plate appearances against Frankie Montas, who starts for the A’s on Friday night, going 1-for-8 with two walks and two hit by pitches.

Friday night’s game (7 p.m. PT) is televised both locally by Fox Sports West and nationally by ESPN.

Andrew Heaney gets the start for the Angels, making his first career opening day start. He’s lasted long in both career starts in Oakland (seven innings in 2015, eight innings in 2018, allowing three runs in both games), which is something that was sorely missed last year with the Angels.

In 2019, the Angels had a starter pitch six innings or longer 33 times, the fewest in the majors. They had a starter last at least seven innings 10 times, also the fewest.

Heaney was originally scheduled for one final tune-up start in an intrasqaud game last Saturday in Anaheim, but after waking up with back stiffness that start was scratched. Earlier this week, Heaney said he’s built up to at least 85 pitches.

“I thought it was the smart thing to do to not really press it, trying to go out there and throw six innings,” Heaney said via conference call Saturday. “Ultimately I need to go for the 60-plus games we have this year.”

Heaney was tied for the Angels staff lead last year, averaging 5.3 innings per start. His six starts of six innings or longer was second on the team to Griffin Canning, who starts Monday.

After Heaney in the opener, the Angels are starting right-handed pitchers in the final three games of the series:

The Angels kick off their 2020 season Friday night in Oakland. Here’s how to watch

The Angels open up their 2020 season on Friday night against the A’s in Oakland (7:10 p.m. PT), the first of a four-game weekend wraparound series at the Oakland Coliseum. The opener will be televised both locally by Fox Sports West and nationally by ESPN.

It’s the fourth straight season the Angels have opened their season in Oakland. The two teams have split the 12 games in those three series, though the A’s have won each of the last three openers.

Andrew Heaney will try to change that on Friday night, making his first career opening day start. The left-hander led Angels pitchers in games started last season, but that the total was only 18 shows how badly the Halos staff was decimated in 2019. With a healthy Shohei Ohtani back on the mound again (he’s starting Sunday), plus additions Dylan Bundy and (eventually) Julio Teheran, the Angels rotation figures to improve this season.

Frankie Montas starts for the A’s, also making his first opening day start. The right-hander was 9-2 with a 2.63 ERA in 16 starts last year for Oakland, a season in which he served an 80-game suspension for testing positive for ostarine, a performance-enhancing drug.

Mike Trout is 7-for-31 (.226) with three home runs and a double in seven opening days. He’s 1-for-8 (.125) with two walks and two hit by pitches in his career against Montas.

Both television broadcasts are a perfect display of covering baseball during a pandemic. Victor Rojas and Mark Gubicza will call the game on Fox Sports West, but will be back home in Anaheim, calling the game from a production truck outside Angel Stadium, as is the plan for all Angels road games this season.

Similarly, the ESPN broadcast will feature announcers calling the game remotely. Karl Ravech will handle play-by-play duties from ESPN studios in Bristol, Connecticut, while analysts Jessica Mendoza and Tim Kurkjian will be in their home during the broadcast. The ESPN broadcast will be available in Southern California.

Online streaming is available through Fox Sports Go and Watch ESPN.

The Angels are 30-29 all-time in season openers, through they have started each of their last six seasons with a loss. Their last opening day win was in 2013 in Cincinnati, when the Halos outlasted the Reds 3-1 in 13 innings.
