A rough first start for Ohtani

Well, you can only go up from here.

For the first time since September 2, 2018, Shohei Ohtani took the mound in an MLB game in Oakland on Sunday. Over the course of the season, Ohtani will be the starter every Sunday, as the Angels have the most off-days on Mondays.

For Ohtani and the Angels, let’s hope that this is as bad as it gets. It was a forgettable start for him on Saturday, as Ohtani failed to record a single out in the Angels’ 6-4 loss to the Athletics.

Ohtani faced only six hitters, but they all reached base. Marcus Semien began the inning with a single. The next three hitters all drew walks, making it the first time in Ohtani’s career that we walked three consecutive batters. Mark Canha then singled in two with the bases loaded, and was followed by Robbie Grossman who singled in a run as well.

Hopefully he’s able to bounce back next Sunday.

After allowing five runs right away, the Angels’ pitching staff did an excellent job of keeping them in the game. Matt Andriese came in to relieve Ohtani and was excellent. He threw 5 2⁄3 innings and allowed only three hits. Andriese also struck out five and issued only one walk.

Meanwhile, Mike Trout did Mike Trout things. He homered on a 3-0 count for the first time in his career, inching the Angels back into the game. Per MLB Stats, Trout had 210 plate appearances prior to this where he had a 3-0 count. This is only the second time he’s recorded a hit.

Maddon hopes to get at least five innings from him

For the first time since September 2, 2018, Shohei Ohtani will take the mound in a regular season MLB game.

“He’s stretched out,” Angels manager Joe Maddon said when asked what the team is expecting from Ohtani today. “If we could get five innings, wonderful. If we could get five plus that would be great. No real restrictions on him, he’s ready to rock and roll. It’s always about bullpen. I know we have extra guys. I like to get starters deep if you can, conserving bullpen is always important. We’ll see how it plays out.”

Ohtani made 10 starts during his rookie campaign in 2018. He threw at least five innings in seven of them, so expect Ohtani to reach that marker and hopefully eat as many innings as possible.

“I’ve seen how much work he’s put in,” Justin Upton said when asked what he’s seen from his teammate leading up to today’s start. “He works about as hard as anybody I’ve ever seen. To see him get back out there is gratifying. I’m excited to see him back on the mound. I’m happy for him to be back out there.”

Maddon said that Ohtani always seems to be in order and has things in control, so he think he’ll be fine in preparation for today.

Years ago, Maddon was trying to recruit Ohtani to sign with the Cubs. Trying to act like a scout, Maddon recalls what he saw from him years back.

“Easy gas is what I saw,” he said. “This incredible ability to spin the baseball and manipulate pitches. He’s athletically gifted. You could see back then what a wonderful young man he is and you can tell how much he loves the game. I’m eager to watch this for years to come. He’s going to keep getting better as he gets more comfortable. Sky is the limit. If he stays healthy, it’s going to be fun to watch.”

Maddon is right. The sky is the limit for Ohtani. Hopefully he’s able to stay healthy over this 60-game stretch.

Update on Anthony Rendon

Maddon didn’t give an exact date as to when he expects Rendon back, but it definitely sounds like it could be soon. One way we could see him return earlier is the fact he can start as the DH before needing to move to third base. Rendon is expected to work out today with the athletic trainers.

“DH is open,” Maddon said. “We’ll find out today. Listen to the athlete and the athletic trainer and make your decision. It’s possible he can DH first, but I don’t know the conclusion yet.”

One Angels star on the mend, another back on the mound

Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon took ground balls at third base before Saturday’s game in Oakland, and continues to progress with a sore oblique.

“He felt really good. He’s going to advance it a little bit more [Sunday morning]. More swinging, more defense,” manager Joe Maddon said after Saturday’s game. “He’s definitely making progress.”

Rendon has missed the first two games, and is still day-to-day. Maddon said he won’t know Rendon’s availability in this series — potentially as a pinch-hitter — until seeing how he feels and conferring with the training staff on Sunday.

Ohtani back on mound

Shohei Othani on Sunday makes his first major league start on the mound in 693 days, and Maddon said Saturday he wouldn’t be necessarily on a pitch count, but rather have the game dictate how long Ohtani lasts in the game.

“I’m just gonna watch it, and try to react,” Maddon said.

We’re officially back to seeing Ohtani as a two-way player, something he showed in 2018 when he was the runaway winner of American League Rookie of the Year. That year gave us a glimpse of how Ohtani will be used, with a similar program this year.

The plan is for Ohtani to get a day off before and after he pitches, which is why he sat on Saturday after starting at designated hitter on Friday night. He’ll also sit Monday.

But first comes that start on the mound on Sunday, which will be his usual day on the mound if everything goes as planned. The Angels have three Monday off days on the schedule (August 3, September 7, September 14), which allows for an off day without a game missed for Ohtani.

In the Angels’ first 60 games in 2018, Ohtani started eight times on the mound and 30 times at designated hitter.
