Deadline was moved to August 31 this year

With the trade deadline now just 16 days away, it’s time to start thinking trades, even if it seems like the season just started.

In this truncated season that didn’t start until July 23, the usual July 31 trade deadline was moved to August 31. With an expanded postseason from 10 to 16 teams, more and more clubs at least have some hope of contention, even if illusory.

Angels general manager Billy Eppler talked to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register about this year’s trade market:

“I think it could create a shortened supply of players out there, and because of the quick nature of the season in general, I think you’re going to have a lot of teams waiting till the last minute,” Angels general manager Billy Eppler said. “It feels like it’s gone that way over the last decade anyway, and that’s after you’ve played four months of baseball.”

Entering Saturday, 26 of 30 teams were either in playoff position or within two games of a postseason berth, which makes the calculus of whether to sell that much more difficult.

Though he homered, Anthony Rendon and the Angels had a frustrating night in Friday’s loss to the Dodgers. | Photo by Harry How/Getty Images

Halos held to 1 hit in 7 innings by Clayton Kershaw

The Angels managed just one hit against Clayton Kershaw, not enough to keep up with the Dodgers in a 7-4 loss on Friday night at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

Kershaw held the Angels without a hit until the fifth inning, when Anthony Rendon made the first one count, leading off the frame with a home run down the left field line, cutting the Halos’ deficit to 2-1. It’s the fourth straight game with a home run for Rendon, the longest streak of his career.

Rendon is one away from the franchise record of five straight games with a home run, set by Bobby Bonds from August 2-7, 1977.

Rendon also walked twice more, giving him an absurd .556 on-base percentage so far on the homestand, and .425 on the season.

But Rendon was the only Angels batter to reach base against Kershaw in seven innings. The rest of the lineup was 0-for-20 with six strikeouts.

Going deeper, at least

Patrick Sandoval established a career long for a second straight start, this time pitching into the seventh, fulfilling manager Joe Maddon’s pregame wish for his starters to pitch deeper into games.

But once again, Sandoval had little to show for it. Just like last Saturday in Texas, when Joey Gallo hit a two-run home run in the sixth sent the Angels to a loss, a sixth inning long ball doomed Sandoval in this one. Cody Bellinger got him this time, a two-run shot that expanded the Dodgers’ lead.

Other than the home run, Sandoval kept the ball on the grass most of the night, inducing 10 ground ball outs to go with his five strikeouts. He also allowed two runs in the third inning, a rally that was buttressed by an error by Anthony Rendon on yet another ground ball, this one a potential double play.

“He makes that play 11 times out of 10,” Maddon said of Rendon.

Sandoval induced a season-high 13 swinging strikes, including seven on his slider, and finished off three of his five strikeouts with the pitch, per Baseball Savant. He started the seventh inning too, but allowed a double to Edwin Rios, the leadoff batter, and was pulled. Rios later scored, another run charged to Sandoval’s tally.

Bellinger, who entered the game hitting just .165/.224/.266, added another two-run home run off Ryan Buchter in the eighth inning, doubling his season total, extending the Dodgers lead. Both home runs the southpaw Buchter has allowed this season have been hit by left-handed batters.

Once Kershaw was out of the game, the Angels rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth inning and another in the ninth, but it was too little, too late. The Angels got the Dodgers to use closer Kenley Jansen for the final out in a game that was 7-1 starting the eighth inning, so that was something, at least.

Friday particulars

Home runs: Anthony Rendon (5); Cody Bellinger 2 (4)

WP — Clayton Kershaw (2-1): 7 IP, 1 hit, 1 run, 2 walks, 6 strikeouts

Patrick Sandoval lasted career-best 6 IP in his last start

Friday night is the 20th game of the season for the Angels, and heading into their weekend series against the Dodgers, Halos relievers have pitched more innings this season (84⅓) than their starters (84).

The Angels are 5-3 when their starting pitcher lasts at least five innings this season, and 2-9 when they don’t.

“We have to really start getting more deep into the games on the consistent basis to really get where we want to be,” manager Joe Maddon said before Friday’s game.

Patrick Sandoval had the longest start of his career last Saturday in Texas, lasting six innings, but suffered the tough-luck 2-0 loss thanks to a two-run home run by Joey Gallo.

“He has very good stuff. It’s good against righties and lefties,” Maddon said. “I just want to see him attack, and dominate the 1-1 count, and get ahead in the count. And with that, he could pitch deep into this game.”

This is an extremely small sample, but batters against Sandoval this year after a 2-1 count are 4-for-9 with a home run, double, a walk, and no strikeouts. After a 1-2 count, they are 2-for-12 with a double, one walk, and six strikeouts.

Injury update

Andrelton Simmons, who has been on the injured list since July 28 with a left ankle sprain, isn’t likely to be activated this weekend, Maddon said. Friday will be the 16th game missed by Simmons, who has been taking batting practice this week at the alternate training site at Long Beach.

“We were hoping that it would be not as sore right now,” Maddon said. “We just have to deal with that. So he’s pushed back a little bit further. I don’t think he’s ready this weekend.”

Angels host Dodgers this weekend in Anaheim

The winners of the last two American League MVP awards face off this weekend in Anaheim, with Mike Trout and the Angels hosting Mookie Betts and the Dodgers beginning Friday night.

The 2019 AL MVP Trout (12 years, $426.5 million) and 2018 AL MVP Betts (12 years, $365 million) also signed the two biggest contracts, by total value, in baseball history. Trout is under contract through 2030, and Betts is signed through 2032.

Friday marks the one-third mark of the season for the Angels, who play their 20th game. Things are starting to normalize, with Trout, the best player in baseball, making his way near the top of the leaderboards. Trout is now tied for seventh in the majors in FanGraphs WAR (1.0). In his eight full seasons, Trout finished first or tied for first in fWAR six times, second (to Betts) once, and fourth once (when he was injured and only played 114 games).

Betts, who homered three times on Thursday night, is third in MLB with a 1.3 fWAR.

Trout’s been especially hot since returning from paternity leave. In his last nine games Trout has seven home runs, hitting .351/.390/.919. He was 6-for-12 with three homers in the three-game series against Oakland.

Trout in his career has hit .246/.331/.492 with eight home runs in 34 games. He has a lower OPS against only three teams, none of which he has played 10 times:

vs. Cardinals: .663 OPS, 9 games

vs. Cubs: .520 OPS, 9 games

vs. Pirates: .431 OPS, 9 games

It says a lot of how great Trout has been that his .823 OPS against the Dodgers only ranks 26th among the teams he’s played.

Trout is 2-for-13 (.154/.313/.231) in his career against Clayton Kershaw, who starts Friday for the Dodgers. Those hits, a single and double, came in his first two at-bat against Kershaw, in 2014, but Trout is 0-for-11 with three walks against him since. They last faced off in 2018.

Also on fire is Anthony Rendon, who has homered in each of his last three games. He entered the homestand in an 0-for-21 slump, but against the A’s he was 5-for-11 (.455/.571/1.273) with three walks, five runs scored and four RBI.

Rendon leads the Angels with 17 walks, giving him the rare combination of a .180 batting average and .406 on-base percentage. I’m willing to go out on a limb and say Rendon won’t end up hitting below the Mendoza Line in 2020. But just in case he does, he could join the only two Angels hitters with at least 100 plate appearances in a season with a sub-.200 batting average and an on-base percentage of at least .350: Tom Burgess (.196/.354 in 183 PA in 1962) and Charlie Sands (.193/.370 in 108 PA in 1974).

RHP was designated for assignment Monday

The Angels sent pitcher José Rodriguez outright to their alternate training site in Long Beach after the he cleared waivers, the team announced Friday.

The right-hander only appeared in one game this season for the Angels, pitching 1⅔ scoreless innings in relief on August 2. He was optioned to the alternate training site on August 5, then designated for assignment on Monday.

Rodriguez appeared in nine games for the Angels last season, posting a 2.75 ERA with 11 walks and 13 strikeouts in 19⅔ innings. It was an odd year for Rodriguez, who allowed only six runs, but all were scored on his five home runs allowed, which helped his FIP inflate to 6.88.

He was sent outright to the minors last December, but was re-added to the 40-man roster on August 1 when he was called up. Now, he’s off the 40-man roster again, but still in the organization and still in the player pool.

Freeway Series begins Friday night in Anaheim. Plus, Andrelton Simmons could be nearing a return.

The Angels are off Thursday, but the first incarnation of the Freeway Series is upon us this weekend in Anaheim.

After a losing road trip the Angels found their way once they returned home, taking two of three from the A’s, who had won nine straight entering that series. The Halos face another tough test this weekend in the Dodgers, and will face their best three pitchers.

This is the first of two series between the Angels and Dodgers this season. They close out the regular season against each other, September 25-27 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Andrelton Simmons has missed the last 15 games with an ankle injury, but took batting practice this week, giving him an outside chance at a return this weekend. Simmons said it would depend how he felt in a few days.

“I’m trying to listen to my body,” Simmons said on Wednesday. “I know it might not feel 100 percent when I come back, but I’m trying to make sure when I do come back, I am helpful to the team, and I’m not a hindrance where I’m not moving around good enough.”

Here is the schedule and television information for the weekend, including two games on national television. Friday will be broadcast on FS1, and Sunday’s game is on TBS, with both available in the local markets along with each team’s broadcast as well.

Friday, 6:40 p.m. (Fox Sports West, SportsNet LA, FS1)

Patrick Sandoval has been okay in his two starts this season, including lasting a career-best six innings last Saturday in Texas, where he was a tough-luck loser despite allowing only two runs. Clayton Kershaw starts for the Dodgers.

This game will also be broadcast in Spanish on Fox Deportes, with Adrian Gonzalez making his television analyst debut.

Saturday, 6:40 p.m. (Fox Sports West, SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

Andrew Heaney is coming off his shortest start of the season, allowing five runs on Sunday in Texas after allowing four total runs in his first three starts of the season. Walker Buehler makes his second career start against the Angels, and his first since 2018 as a rookie.
