Halos fall in 10 on Sunday series finale in Oakland

The ever-elusive second straight win proved too tall a task for the Angels on Sunday, falling 5-4 to the Athletics in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon in Oakland.

The Angels fell to 1-4 in extra-inning games this season, including 0-2 on the road. Both losses were in Oakland.

In the top of the 10th inning, the Angels failed to advance their free baserunner on second base, but in the bottom of the inning Matt Chapman singled and Mark Canha hit a sacrifice fly to send the Angels to their 20th loss in 29 games this season.

The Angels are 2-7 in their series this year, and since beating these A’s twice at home on August 10-11 — the only consecutive wins so far this season — the Angels have lost nine of 11 games.

Dylan Bundy was coming off his only subpar start so far with the Angels, allowing four runs in four innings on Tuesday against San Francisco. That was also 99 degrees at game time in Anaheim, compared to 70 degrees on Sunday afternoon in Oakland.

He got four runs charged to his ledger again in this one, though two came in the first inning after a fly ball that Jo Adell botched in right field.

“If we catch the flyball in the first inning, he’s cruising in that inning and would eventually come out having given up no runs, and about 15 less pitches,” manager Joe Maddon said after the game. “All those things multiply. We have to not make those mistakes. We have to make the pitch when it’s necessary. We’ve got to believe in ourselves. So that’s what we’re working on very diligently right now.”

Bundy pitched into the sixth inning, the first Angels starter in eight games to complete five innings. He struck out six and walked one, and enters the halfway point of his season with a 2.58 ERA, a 3.08 FIP, plus 44 strikeouts against only eight walks in 38⅓ innings.

Before the 10th, the A’s first four runs were all scored with two outs.

“We’ve lost that game today five, maybe six times [this season],” Maddon said.

The Angels got their offense from a couple expected sources, albeit struggling ones.

Shohei Ohtani smoked a pitch 111.3 mph off A’s starter Frankie Montas for an opposite-field home run in the third inning, the three-run shot giving the Angels the lead.

That snapped an 0-for-19 skid for Ohtani, and was his first home run since August 10.

Brian Goodwin in the fifth inning snapped an 0-for-21 slump by singling to right field, driving home the Angels’ fourth run.

That chased Montas, but Oakland’s bullpen limited the Angels to just two hits and four walks the rest of the way, and no runs.

The road trip continues to Houston, beginning with a battle of lefties on Monday. Patrick Sandoval starts the series opener for the Angels, facing Framber Valdez for the Astros.

Tommy La Stella gets the start at first base on Sunday.

The Angels finish up their series against the A’s on Sunday afternoon in Oakland with probably their strongest lineup.

One notable absence is Albert Pujols, out of the lineup for a second straight day. Pujols has started only three out of the last nine games, after starting 15 times in the first 20 games of the season. Though it probably has more to do with the Angels facing only one left-handed pitcher during that span, after seeing seven southpaws in the first 20 games.

Pujols is 15 for 72 on the season, hitting .208/.250/.375 with three home runs.

Tommy La Stella gets the start Sunday at first base, his sixth start at the position in the last nine game. Andrelton Simmons is back at shortstop after sitting Sunday, with David Fletcher at second base.

La Stella is hitting .302/.389/.540 against right-handed pitchers this season, his 155 wRC+ against righties trailing only Anthony Rendon (185) and Mike Trout (178) on the team.

“Tommy’s swinging the bat really well,” Maddon said before Sunday’s game.

Hitting right-handed pitchers has been a strength for the Angels this season, hitting .252/.337/.451 against them, with a 117 team wRC+ that ranks sixth in the majors.

The righty they face on Sunday is Frankie Montas, who allowed one run in four innings on opening day against the Angels. Montas allowed four runs with a 1.57 ERA in his first four starts, but got hammered for nine runs while recording only five outs on Tuesday in Arizona.

He’s been great for the Angels this season

Through his first four starts of the season, Dylan Bundy was looking like the early favorite to win the American League Cy Young Award. He was 3-1 with an ERA of 1.57, along with 35 strikeouts and only three walks in 28 2⁄3 innings. Opponents were hitting only .150 off him, and he was cruising through his starts.

He came back down to earth during his last start, as he had his first rough outing of the year. On Tuesday against the Giants, Bundy lasted only four innings, his shortest outing of the year. He allowed four runs on four hits while walking four as well.

Bundy is likely not the favorite to win the award anymore after that start with such a short season. However, one more great start can get him right back on track and right back into the discussion.

This will already be the third time this season Bundy will face the Athletics. In his first start of the season against them, Bundy threw 6 2⁄3 innings of one-run ball. He allowed only three hits while striking out seven and issuing zero walks.

He was even better in his next outing, throwing seven shutout innings with only four hits. Bundy struck out a season-high 10 batters and issued only one walk.

The Angels will enter Sunday’s game at 9-19. Remember, with the new playoff format, the Angels can still finish third (even fourth) in the division and still make the playoffs. With only 32 games, there is a lot of ground to make up. However, if the Angels can go on a little winning streak, they can find themselves back in the playoff hunt after a few games.
