Manny staying put...

From Gordon Edes (Boston Globe) at the GM meetings:

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- I think you can pretty much cross Anaheim off Manny's list.

I just learned in the last couple of minutes that the Angels are under the assumption that Manny doesn't want to DH, and neither does Garret Anderson, so where do you play him?

I'm telling you right now, one of Manny's better friends on the team told me after the World Series that he thinks Manny is staying. The new GM will have to sort that one out.

Basically, as I predicted...

Prediction...
Manny will not be a member of the Red Sox on opening day 2006.  He may not be an Angel, but he will not be in Boston, either.

Well
As is my prediction that he won't be an Angel.  I think he will be back in Boston as Gordon Edes travels with the team and management...

Only time will tell...
It's posted out here now so one of us can say 'I told you so' come opening day.  So I say he won't be in Boston and you say he will be.

There's obviously nothing definitive from this article as it just says a great friend of Manny's on the team thinks he's staying.  A)  was this before or after he reportedly asked to be traded for the 1000th time B) does it matter if Ortiz or Damon or whoever said this says he's staying?  There have also been stories that said all of the people left in the Boston front office are now on board with trying to move him.  All of it is speculation for now.

Should be a fun bet that should lead to some good natured ribbing one way or another.  I wish I knew you personally, we could put a wager on it!  Anything to spice up the offseason.

I've already said I'd take it if I was wrong...
And, I believe Gordon Edes is more trustworthy (Follows the team for the Globe) than other "outsiders" who report front office this, and front office that.  Because Epstein WAS THE ONE WHO WANTED HIM TRADED.  Lucchino said no way.  So, no idea where you're getting that info from (REV)?  I think I trust a reporter who follows the team...and his comments came from his blog which were posted as of today.  Any speculation that Manny wanted to be traded was BEFORE the WS.  His friend said AFTER the World Series that Manny was probably staying.

Hey, we can come up with some sort of wager...let's be creative.  They MAY eventually move him for the right package, but I definitely DO NOT see him going to the Angels.  I still believe if he goes, he goes to the Mets.

I actually welcome the good natured ribbing...let me have it!

Memo to GA
If Scioscia tell you to DH, you will be the f'in DH.  It is absolutely ridiculous--Manny Ramirez involved or not--that GA should be playing the field AT ALL.  Last season with him in left and Juan Rivera DH'ing, it made the defense that much worse.  GA might not want to DH, but my response to him is: too fucking bad.

If Stoneman had any stones, he would approach GA and say, "We have the chance to get Manny Ramirez to hit fourth and play leftfield. For this to happen, you need to DH. What do you say?"

And then if GA says, "No, i play the field." then the response is, "You either DH or we deal you."

If GA is smart (and if this report is to be believed), he'll buck up and realize how many RBI chances he'll have with Vlad and Manny on base ahead of him.

(the other alternative is to stick him in CF. It's not like he's any worse there than Frosty was this year).

GA as dh
I heard Mike Scoscia interviewed on ESPN a week or so ago and he was asked why he continues to play GA instead of Rivera in left.  Mike said that in his opinion GA fields the position better than Rivera.  So we may not see GA in the DH role next season.

Special at LensCrafters
If Scioscia actually believes that line of BS he's peddling, he needs to get his ass to LensCrafters before Opening Day.

Not convinced
But if CBLESZ is right, props to him, if Manny is an Angel in '06, he sold me his soul and I will be having him work in the salt mines of Halos Hell.

Manny vs Garrett in left...
Garrett isn't great in left field, but he's definitely better than Manny defensively in left.  If Manny does end up an Angel, I sure hope they wouldn't play him in left over GA.

On the Manny thing to CBlesz, so you're side of the bet now is that he may get traded, but not to the Angels?  That I can see, but I definitely think he'll be traded.  I tried to find the article that said everyone is onboard to the trade, but I couldn't.  If I find it, I'll post it.

Not the article I was looking for, but...
Here's a report that the Mets to Sox deal may still be alive.  http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=111103

Agree
I agree that he MAY be traded.  I just don't think he will.  I surely do not think he will be traded to the Angels.  The Mets are a possibility, but he's said (supposedly) he doesn't want to go there.

Rev, I have stated that if I am wrong, I will admit it publicly here.  I would expect you (who has said clearly that Manny would be a Halo) to openly admit you were 100% wrong as well...

Now, there is a story that Philly inquired about it and Manny said no, through his agent...

Boston Herald
This may be what you're talking about...

For those keeping track of Manny Ramirez' preferred destinations in a trade, Philadelphia is not on the list. Ramirez' former hitting coach in Cleveland, Charlie Manuel, is the Phillies manager.

The Angels, who are on Ramirez' list, have no interest in including right-hander Ervin Santana in any Ramirez deal.

Another name to keep in mind as the Red Sox mull replacements for Ramirez in the batting order is Tampa Bay's Aubrey Huff, who can play first, third or the outfield.

* Thank goodness they're not dumb enough to included Ervin Santana!

by thewebb on Nov 9, 2025 7:06 AM PST reply actions

That's why...
I don't see him going to the Halos.  Boston wants Santana and the Angels will not include him.  Hence, no Angel deal.

Another note, I just read that Lucchino confirmed Manny's trade request and said one team has inquired (wouldn't mention the team, though).

Our front office wont do it
Bottom line: If anything our front office has shown in recent years, is extreme protection (for the most part) of the young talent.  I just dont see them wanting to part with any of their young arms, or bats, and I dont mean just Santana...

Ramirez would be a great move for the team, in my opinion, but I just don't think the trigger will be pulled.

by Angels101 on Nov 9, 2025 9:00 PM PST reply actions

I agree with theweb and Angels 101
Ramirez would be a nice addition to any lineup.  All the guy does his hit and hit and hit.  The media likes to make him out to be odd and that is because he is.  But we can't confuse odd though with a bad teammate (jose guillen...I would rather get knocked out of the playoffs without him on the team than I would like to advance a round with him on).  Everything I have read says his teammates like him. Therefore, I think he would be a great addition.

I agree with theweb though.  There is no way the angels should trade ervin santana.  He is the future.  I also agree with angels101 in his statement that past history shows us stoneman won't make a move while giving his young talent. So I do not see manny coming to the angels.

I heard a great comment the other day about stoneman.  He is a great offseason general manager and then he takes the season off.  Meaning he puts the team he likes together and then just sinks or swims with them.
