Manny's Going Nowhere

As expected, Manny's going nowhere.  Just his offseason "trade me" rant.

Star-divide

"You're not going to get value in any way, shape or form," said Bill Lajoie, an adviser to Theo Epstein who has been the team's point man since the wonderboy GM walked away on Halloween. "This is an A-1 hitter and you're not going to get an A-1 player that somebody is going to give you. So if you trade him, you're not going to get the same value, man for man, and sometimes four players don't even add up to one."

Complicating matters is the fact that Ramirez has the right to veto any trade. He has said he would only consider a few teams; those in small markets can't get involved because of the size of his contract.

The team has also considered whether Ramirez's departure would hurt the production of No. 3 hitter David Ortiz, who was runner-up in the AL MVP voting last year. And Lajoie balked at -- but did not rule out -- the idea of paying part of Ramirez's contract just to unload him.

"You're going to pay another team to have that player beat you?" Lajoie said. "That doesn't make sense, does it?"

Wonder what value Boston will get for Manny sitting out Spring Training

At which point
The Red Sox release him for failure to perform, thus voiding his contract.

Then where is all the value
that Lajoie is talking about if that is the end result.

IF they trade him, they save a bunch, if they void his contract they save a bunch. Saving money doesn't protect Ortiz in the lineup.

Rocky Mountain News Is Reporting This:
* Boston has talked to the Los Angeles Angels about a deal sending Manny Ramirez to the Angels for Darin Erstad and Casey Kotchmann.

let's assume this is true. I'd do it, but who would play first? Uggh, um, Mike Sweeney?

by beercub @ Halos Heaven on Dec 6, 2025 1:39 PM PST reply actions

maybe morales
if that is in fact a true, it may be a sign that the Angels consider Kendry Morales ready to assume the first base duties full time. (or, likewise, that they have a deal in place to get Sweeney whenever they want to).

maybe..
they'll bring Speizio back so we can be treated to highlights of his Game 6 homer 81 games a season.  I'm not even sure I'd be mad!

I agree it won't happen
Trade won't happen because Sox want fair value, which is what they should get.  So what's fair value?  Certainly not Erstad and Kochman.  They want an arm as well.

Stoneman will do as he always does - play the "prospects" close to the vest and not trade them, and we will not get Manny.  For me, it's frustrating, because "prospects" are just that - we have no idea what they will do in the big leagues.  Manny is a proven commodity.  Now, I'm not saying deal Santana (the kid will be something special, that we have proof of)...but other "prospects" that we don't really know? Pull the trigger with them.  It's a gamble either way, but a worthwhile one.

Sweeney isn't the answer.  There's numerous hitters out there who can put up his decent power numbers..if that's the other option, then let Morales come up and play, I bet his rookie numbers won't be too different than Sweeney's regular numbers.

If I were GM...it's either Manny (a superior hitter), or I don't bother bringing an average to above average bat in cuz I'm confident I've got that in the minors already. Manny's bat, without question, will bring the additional punch our squad lacked last year, and give us a great shot for the next 5-6 years (or at least 3) to be a serious world series contender.

Dunno bout the rest of you, but right now? With the same staff plus Konerko and Thome the Sox look like they'll repeat.  I think us getting Manny brings up to their level.
