John's performance tonight was a well-placed illustration as to why the WHIP statistic is horseshit. Sometimes, giving in and getting the men on base works in your favor, it can even be part of your game. Black and Scioscia have been working John's mentality toward batters with runners on. He used to take it personally. Now they are coaching him to WHIP it good.
