MLB Winter Meetings: Angels looking for (another) 4th outfielder

The Angels and Billy Eppler really wasted no time in addressing the current left field situation, or lack thereof. Cameron Maybin was swiftly snatched up on November 3rd, just days after the season had ended, in a trade that saw Victor Alcantara going to the Tigers.

Many thought this would be the end of their OF moves, but alas, Billy Eppler went ahead and got yet another outfielder in Ryan Lamarre, who was signed to a one year major league deal, and thought to be their impending #4 guy on the OF depth chart.

The Lamarre signing, though, is becoming a bit of a head-scratcher, at least if the rumors coming out of the Winter Meetings is true.

So the Angels are looking for another 4th OF? If they wanted a lefty fourth OF, why even get Lamarre in the first place? Lamarre was cheap, though, and whomever they have their eyes will probably be cheap as well, so this might just be typical Eppler stockpiling of one position, throwing lots of names against a wall and hoping one sticks.

So who are some possible targets for this proposed left-handed-hitting fourth outfielder? A few names come to mind.

Chris Coghlan: Here we have a former NL Rookie of the Year award winner (2009) who has had his fair share of ups and downs since that breakout year. He’s coming off a season where he struggled mightily in the first half with the Athletics but then got traded back to the Cubs, where he improved his hitting a bit but also beefed up his OBP. He’d be cheap, he bats lefty and can even play a couple INF positions on top of left field.

Alejandro De Aza: This guy had a decent 2015, but then turned into a garbage fire last year with the Mets. He’s also 32 years old, no spring chicken. But he would come cheap, he is used to coming off the bench and he bats lefty.

Angel Pagan: This is an interesting player for the Angels to be taking a look at. Pagan has always been fairly reliable and consistent, he’s got good enough defensive chops, and yes, he bats from the left side of the plate. I’d actually be down with a LF combo of Maybin/Pagan, but I assume the rub here is his price tag. Pagan just finished up a contract that saw him getting a little over $11 million per year, so you can assume that he’s going to be a lot more expensive than the names I’ve previously mentioned. Still, I can see this working out quite nicely for the Angels, if they are really set on getting another OF.

Ben Revere: This is an idea that’s been talked about in the Angels Twittersphere lately, mainly due to Jeff Fletcher’s write up and getting the conversation going. Revere is a guy that we were hoping the Angels traded for just a season or two ago, but man, things have changed. Revere is coming off a pretty horrible season in Washington (.216 BA, .260 OBP), so if they went this direction, it’d be based on the hopes that he bounces back big time.

Do the Angels really need another 4th OF? If so, who could help the team the most?
