The Angels have signed 2009 Rookie of the Year and two-time All Star Andrew Bailey to a minor league contract and released RHP Al Alburquerque, although it doesn’t look like the two moves were correlated since Bailey doesn’t require a 40-man roster spot. His career has been derailed by shoulder injuries, which has resulted in a velocity dip, and some pretty rough results after his first year in Boston. Still, Bailey was an absolute force when he broke onto the scene with Oakland.
It’s pretty simple, the Angels are bad and need bullpen depth just as bad, Bailey was released by the Phillies last week and the cost to take a flier on him was minimal. He made his debut last night for the Salt Lake City Bees and threw a perfect inning with 2 K’s. Could potentially see him pitch for the Angels when rosters expand in September.
