HumpLinks: Angels HARPooned

New, 132 comments

Bryce Harper was one defensive play shy of a Cycle. And on a night of home runs that was just what the Nats needed to defeat the Angels.

How's THAT for Destiny? The Nats prepared for the game last night by activating Edwin Jackson to start, and activating Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson to relieve Edwin Jackson out of the bullpen. And they opened the game with a Bryce Harper home run. Heck, MLB.com headlined with Bryce Harper and Mike Trout on the cover page, even though Aaron Judge got a couple of O - M - G singles!

In the game, Harper goes 4 for 4 and raises his season BA to .337. Trout goes 1 for 4 and lowers his season BA to .335. Harper's night was one outfield assist from Ben Revere short of a cycle. Trout's night was an immediate first-inning home run answer to Harper's first-inning home run, and an RBI ground out in the 9th, with not much else in between. And, in the end, the Nats won 4-3. Of the 7 runs scored all game, 5 were solo homers. The real measure was that the Nats collected 12 hits, and the Angels only 4.

A Little Bit of Angels News

Here is that chart I promised to you yesterday, showing the Angels as the 3rd most cost-effective team for fans to watch in all of MLB: This research comes to us from TickPick:

MLB_Cost_Per_Win

Tyler Skaggs is feeling pretty good after his first rehab start two days ago............

Andrelton Simmons has been named the Angels' Prelim 2017 Heart & Hustle Award winner...........

Cameron Maybin just slid himself right out of potential trade bait status. He has to leave the game last night after screwing up the ugliest slide of the year on a steal attempt last night............And the Angels knew right away that Maybin is out for a while..............

Watch out for Martin Maldonado wearing down. Mike Scioscia is. Maldo has never played this many games behind the plate. So that home run in the 6th inning last night? Yeah. Dude is getting tired............

Mike Trout is back!

Everywhere In Baseball

See what I get? Here I go whining about Mike trout's head first sliding, since he ripped up his thumb. So I on the same day that Cameron Maybin gets injured by NOT sliding headfirst (as he prefers) Carlos Correa goes onto the DL because he also catches Trout syndrome and rips up his thumb. Not by sliding, but by simply swinging his bat.............

See how fickle the MSM can be? Aaron Judge goes a few games without getting a hit (he singled twice last night) and all of a sudden here is ESPN pimping themselves: "See? We're all about Bryce Harper and Mike Trout! Faces of Baseball, people! And we got 'em!!"............Oh, and USATODAY, too!!! (By the way, who is that skinny kid in the powder blue American League All Star uni on that link?)

Someday Cody Bellinger is going to cost the Dodgers a LOT of money (Clayton Kershaw is already costing them a lot of money). The Dodgers are looking to get a head start on the revenue needed to pay for that. They are looking to sell the naming rights to the grass at Dodger Stadium. Just in time to have that grass sell a lot of eyeballs in the 2017 World Series. Just $12 million per season...........

The White Sox are in full SELL mode. It's putting them at the front of the line for all sellers this season, letting them get the better goods. Yesterday it was the Yankees stocking up the ChiSox farm system, getting back a new third baseman in Todd Frazier, AND a a couple of bullpen arms............On the upside, this allows the White Sox to call up Yoan Moncada, the dude that Jerry Dipoto cockblocked himself out of being able to sign so that he could blow a wad on Roberto Baldoquin...............

If the baseballs are helping batters hit flyballs over the home run fence, why are they also helping flyball pitchers lower their ERA?.........

The Big news on the trade wire yesterday was the DBacks getting the top bat on the 2017 market, J.D. Martinez of the Tigers, in exchange for three prospects of suspect worth. And, really, what Detroit is pretty weak sauce..........Even Detroit is shocked............

I just have to post these two links together. On the one hand, ESPN is renegotiating carriage fees and is looking to raise rates (which will be passed along to you and me) AND change penetration thresholds to force carriers to add back lost subscribers...........So is it really any wonder why alt streaming services such as NetFlix are adding subscribers at record rates?............

The Duffle Bag

Old man Bartolo Colon, he the final Montreal Expo still standing, shows a kid how it's done............Minor Leaguers miss flight, take Uber cross country to catch up with teammates. Spend half their annual salary..........This guy's not running or office or anything, is he?...........Everybody came out to Angel Stadium to witness Harper and Trout, and it was only an accident that there was a huge bobblehead giveaway...........Never forget that this Jean Segura guy is a product of the LAA farm system..........

Jordan Serena Destiny Watch

Serena played last night, going 0 for 3 with a walk and a run scored as the 66er's roared back and scored 9 runs in the 7th inning to defeat the Nuts 9-8............

The Mobile BayBears did not play last night. No Matt Thaiss updates (or future 3B Jose Rojas, either)......
