Thor'sLinks: Nats Meyered in Anaheim

New, 64 comments

Cron bomb, and Trout's 2nd homer in 2nd night back up Alex Meyer 1-hit gem as freaky-looking LAA lineup comes freakishly alive with offense.

Wow. So this is the Alex Meyer Eppler was targeting when he got the Ricky Nolasco throw-in for Hector Santiago last year? Chalk up Big Win for Eppler!

Meyer was brilliant, going 7 full innings of 1-hit shutout baseball to completely dominate one of MLB's strongest teams. David Hernandez and Jose Alvarez finished off the Nats with 2 innings of perfect relief, and the Washington bats were shut completely down. The public-facing statements coming from the Nationals was that Bryce Harper needed a night off to rest his tired 24-year old body. Playing 5 whole games in 5 days can be exhausting for a young guy in his prime. Right? Well, Harper can consider himself lucky. He got to duck Mike Scioscia's Cy Rookie Experience.

But the other side was even more exciting. A 2-run power blast from each of C.J. Cron and Mike Trout punctuated a productive lineup that, from all appearances, shouldn't even have been bolted together in a Major League game. They scored 7 runs, and STILL left 6 runners on base. And they left WSN pitchers cursing and grumbling on the mound all night.

And the Angels can chalk up another series split against a top WS contender, 7-0 over the hapless Dusty Nats.

By the way, before we begin allow me a brief moment  to enjoy....

A Little Bit of Angels News

Yep. The Angels knew it pretty fast Tuesday night. Cameron Maybin is out 2 - 4 weeks with a knee boo boo. That's why, as I linked yesterday, they pulled Shane Robinson from the field in Salt Lake City almost immediately...........

We gotta help Victor and his family out here. Looks like he finally made it to his first non In'N'Out burger outlet. Sure enough, epiphany...........

CJ Cron's colossal clubbing. Have we gotten to the point already where we look at these charts and can tell right away the unique quality of the home run - power/distance/angle/velo??...........

Credit where credit due: Shane Robinson set the tome early with this brilliant play in RF to rob Daniel Murphy. This is not the quality of play that I was expecting when we learned Robinson was coming up to replace Maybin.............

Josh Mayhood's Library of Mike Trout Hagiography

And there you go, people. Others noticed, too. MLB finally found a way to match up Bryce Harper and Mike Trout, and they put it on a Tuesday night at 10PM eastern. Idiots. Don't give me any bullshit about how tough it is to put together schedules and all that. Not when there has never, ever been a Sunday Yankees Red Sox game that was NOT the Game Of The Week on National TV.. But, yeah, let's try to up-sell the game by first worrying the crap out of all the massive time lost to IBB's.........

Maybe this is why MLB doesn't bother to promote Harper/Trout. Because trying to compare Harper to Trout is a waste of time. Mike Trout is simply too great for even a Bryce Harper..........

But, then again, Harper DOES get to play in October a lot more than Trout does, and that counts for something..........

I hated to do this, because it's a FOX Sports video, but the question is Trout/Harper/Correa, which player would you start to build a team around? So, of course, each panelist has a different answer. But I'm going to pick on Pete Rose. Rose takes Harper, and his reason is that it's because Harper is a left-handed batter and MLB is mostly right-handed pitching. Sounds fair, right? Yeah, only if you are not paying any attention to just how incredible Mike Trout really is. Consider these career splits for Batting Average:

Trout Rose Harper
vs. RHP .312 .307 .297
vs. LHP .295 .293 .260

So, yeah, I could see that if you have Bryce Harper, you are glad that most of MLB is right-handed pitching. But you would need to be a special kind of idiot to prefer to lesser numbers than the greater numbers as the foundation for an entire team. And, for the record, Trout leads Harper AND Rose in ALL the categories of BA, OBP, SLG and OPS...and against BOTH LHP and RHP............

Jeff Passan looks at the "what if?", projecting what Trout might have made this winter as a Free Agent had he not signed that extension. The average consensus back from those he queried runs in the range of $50 million per year. Sounds about right............

By the way, Mike Trout would need to get 502 Plate Appearances when the season is over to qualify for things like any batting title. He only has 227, and there are only 65 games left to get those missing 275. That's an average of 4.23 PA's per game. Every game. No games off. Ain't gonna happen. Not with this offense around him. Especially not with 34 of those games at home, and even winning at a rate of .400 would mean that in at least 14 of those games the Angels might only get 8 frames of at-bats.

Everywhere In Baseball

Kris Bryant got a boo boo yesterday. But he is merely day-to-day. The 2017 DL would make quite an All-Star team, no?............

A FiveThirtyEight podcast taking us all further into the geekdom of batting stats, comparing BA to OPS to wRC+............Or you could simply go back to Rahul's dive into the subject..........

Giancarlo Stanton is calling out his teammates. I dunno. The guy has locked up something like $325 gabillion in payroll on a team that has a cheap owner, and few fans. Unless the new owners have some magic slush fund up their sleeve, Stanton is going to be playing with those same guys for a while............

Say it ain't so, Bartolo! Colon is going to reflect on how well he does in his next start before considering retirement. His next start is against eh Dodgers. I, for one, am pulling for a Perfect Game..........

Apparently Tom Verducci over at Sports Illusatrated was unhappy with his column a couple of months ago focusing on MLB pitchers moving away from fastballs. (where he was parroting another, earlier, article anyway, or our own Rick Souddress).  He must not have gotten the traffic he was expecting. But Verducci is no dummy, so he has put up a new column on how New York Yankee pitchers and moving away from fastballs. Yeah. Yankees. That should draw eyeballs..........

Pablo 'Panda' Sandoval getting rescued by the pitiful Giants? Why?............Are they thinking that they need something special to restart their sellout streak?...........

The Duffle Bag

Aaron Judge needed a day off. So he got it. Oh wait, he came in to pinch hit. And struck out anyway. No day off for you! The kid will be fine, but that post ASG slash line of .115/.258/.116 with an OPS of .373 has MFY fans and media whores awfully quiet..........I think it's great that there is such a thing as Rookie the Bat Dog. I also think it's great that Rookie is still a rookie at being Bat Dog..........Thinking outside the box, the Orioles are about to do a pretty unique giveaway: player bottle stoppers. You guys know how much I love it when a team thinks outside the box on their promos. I dig this one. Insanely, one guy is selling 10 sets for something that he doesn't even yet have in his hot little hands. As of this writing, he had sold 9 of them already. And the giveaway ain't for 2 more days..........Geez. When this Giants fan was born Woodrow Wilson was still President..........Oh, sure. This is a nice catch on a stupid ballpark gimmick. But how about some high fives for TV broadcast of Minor League Baseball?............

No IE 66ers game last night, so Serena is on hiatus............No AZL Angels game, either............But in a 12-1 loss to the Chattanooga Lookouts, BayBears Matt Thaiss went 0-4 and Jose Rojas 1-4..........
