MondoLinks: Anaheim still owning Boston

New, 78 comments

After going 2 for 3 before the break, the Angels remind the Red Sox that, even with both hands tied behind their back, they can take 2 of 3 any time they want.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

You know, if the Angels could play only the Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers and Nationals, they would win almost 100 games this season. Over the last month they have played those teams 15 times, and won 9 of them. This weekend, they sent the BoSux bandwagon brigade home series losers with a 3-2 home run winning attack yesterday to back up the Parker Bros. It was a speedy thumping, with a trio of home runs from Andrelton Simmons (with homers in back-to-back games), Mike Trout (with his 3rd home run over his last 5 games), and Luis Valbuena (remarkably, ALSO his 3rd home run over his last 5 games). By the way, Anrelton Simmons has NEVER had a Slugging average this high (.450 in the morning) this late into any season. Simba be on fire.

If you were watching the game on TV, after that Mike Trout home run there was a moment when the kid who caught the ball out in the center field bleachers was seen using his cellphone to announce the moment. Victor asked Gubi what the kid might have been typing at that moment. Here is the actual answer to Victor's question.............

A Little Bit of Angels News

Regardless of where this season ends up, you MUST bank the magic that are Keynan Middleton and Parker Bridwell. This is Billy Eppler voodoo. It's the kind of thing that fills the gaps that you and I just know to exist when planning on paper. These are right guys, at the right time in their career, matched with the right coaching, and granted the right opportunity...............

That is some secret sauce to remember, because there are times when the guys you DID pencil in for your big horses are not going to work out...........Take Garrett Richards, for example, still merely inching his way back to anything productive............Or maybe Matt Shoemaker, who is just now trying to restart his throwing rehab.............Or maybe Tyler Skaggs, who made it through his second rehab and will be stretched out to 5 innings this week............

The one click link to the entire history of the name of our franchise, compiled into a non-news reference article that any one of you could have written, but didn't...........

Josh Mayhood's Library of Mike Trout Hagiography

Here is Trout making a statement about the poor media coverage of his awesomeness this month..............

Mike is right on the precipice of his next historic milestone. While theMSM has been distracted by a 25-year old Aaron Judge, with his next home run a 25-year old Trout will have his SIXTH 20 HR season. This puts him in extremely rare company.  In fact, since Trout also steals bases, he will do something only one other player has ever done............

With yesterday's production, the next time that BBR recalculates their data, Mike Trout (now at 52.2 bWAR) will surpass Chuck Finley (at 52.2 bWAR) for the all-time Franchise bWAR record. (At 51.5 fWAR, Trout surpassed Finley's 46 fWAR last year.).............

Mike is back, but he ain't back. Sure, the LA Times would like to claim he is back: "Since returning to the lineup July 14, Trout has barely missed a beat. He's hitting without apparent discomfort and hitting pretty close to how he was before the injury." Uh, no. Since coming back his slash line is .276/.382/.483 with and OPS of .865. When he went down, that same slash line was .337/.461/..742 with an OPS of 1.203. Those two data sets are most definitely not "pretty close"...Now, I don't make this note as a point of alarm. It's only been a few games. And I have always held that Mike will require a few weeks to warm up and return to Troutian heights. It'll come. It's good to hear that his thumb ain't bothering him (though where have we heard that before?). But let's not kid ourselves. This has merely been lower case 'trout'. Upper case 'Trout' is coming..............

By the way, since the ASG, hizzonor has a slash line of .158/.327/.316 with an OPS of .642. Overall, he has dropped to 23rd in BA, 3rd in OBP, is still clinging to 1st in SLG and OPS (over Bryce Harper) and HR (over Giancarlo Stanton. But his 125 K's are 3rd worst (behind Miguel Sano and Khris Davis)...........

Everywhere In Baseball

The Mariners have, apparently, chosen to take themselves out of the playoff chase. They volunteered to sign THE Danny Espinosa as roster depth............

Whoa! Who could have suspected that the Boston sports scene is full of racism?..............

Some media stuff: VICE Sports, having learned nothing from the FOX mistake, has fired their writers and flipped to all-video. Another daily linkage source, lost............If you can scroll fast enough to get past the part where a sports announcer goes off on the world because New York City is the greatest and deserves a champion, you will eventually get to the part where another announcer then goes batshit crazy and claims that MLB players have too much contractual power over the owners.............

Bad weekend for baseball bounces. Ryon Healy took a bad hop to the face............And Colin Moran took a foul ball to the head..........Both players had to be taken off the field immediately.............Then, Clayton Kershaw was pulled in the 2nd inning with back stiffness and will hit the DL.............This was then followed with Stephen Strasburg being pulled from his start with forearm stiffness.............

When looking at how teams pay, or overpay, today for Free Agent players, I would like to see the study done with Albert Pujols missing form the data. He is clearly skewing the post-2011 numbers. Maybe then we could get a fresh look at that Blue Jays - Kendrys Morales blooper...........

The rich battling to get richer. Yu Darvish is on the market. Since  he goes FA in a couple of months, it's a rental with a first right of refusal. So who are stepping up? You will be shocked to read that the suitors are the Dodgers, and the Cubs, and the Yankees............

Meanwhile, somebody out there wants to ask about Jose Bautista, for some odd reason............

Jeff Samardzija may have clocked teammate Jeff Morse right out of a baseball career..............

Even more data on how college coaches are shredding young arms. Something that we might want to consider going forward when choosing between college or high school pitchers............

After reading this, I can only giggle at David Price losing big on Saturday...........

The Duffle Bag

Good job, Daytona Tortugas, with your SagerStrong Night..............Who says the broadcast crew can't have any fun for themselves at the ballgame? Duane Kiper knows how to have a laugh...........Topps has erased Chief Wahoo from their publications, contemporary and retro.............Yo Cespedes has thrown out whatever contractual power he might have years from now, promising to play one last season in Oakland. Whenever that happens...........Adrian Beltre, The One That Got Away, is almost as old as I am (well, almost 'almost'), but he can do this..............Nobody likes the idea of Dee Gordon possibly moving to Anaheim? Not even the children?............Back-to-back no-hitters? Who were the Nats MiLB affiliate facing? Oh. Some team called the "Marlins"............(h/t reddit) Yesterday a reddit user caught ESPN with their Aaron Judge kneepads still on............Mark Trumbo IS a powerful hitter. Too bad for Trumbo that baseball is more than a Home Run Derby.............Mighty Ducks baseball uniforms? I might have to have one of those...............I'd certainly have one of the Mighty Ducks jerseys before I would pay for any Tim Tebow dirt. No, really. Tim Tebow dirt.............

Jordan Serena Destiny Watch

Jordan made an appearance over the weekend, playing Saturday night and going 1 for 2 with 1 walk, but 3 runs scored (???) .............On the whole, Serena is batting .239/.292/.321 with an OPS of .613. I am afraid to report that this is nowhere near what that other guy is doing in High A over in Florida...........

Elsewhere on the south 40 over the weekend:

At AA Mobile, Matt Thaiss was 3 for 11, Taylor Ward was 2 for 9, and Jose Rojas was 2 for 12 with a triple...........

At High A IE, Jahmai Jones went 6 for 11 with 3 walks and 2 RBI, scoring 2 runs himself...........

And in the AZL, The Angels game on Friday was postponed, creating the need for a double-header on Saturday. Nonie Williams went 1 for 5 over the two games, while Jordon Adell played only the second game and went 0 for 3. Last night's game was suspended in the 3rd (and remained so at the time of this writing).
