Orem Owlz have 4 players on the Pioneer League All-Star roster

New, 8 comments

Last year the Owlz sent only 2 players to the All-Star Game

Chris Rodriguez

The Pioneer/Northwest All-Star game takes place in Hillsboro, Oregon on Tuesday August 1st, at 7:05 PM. I have a short trip to Portland coming up and I’m bummed I’m missing this game by only 2 days!

This year, the Angels organization has 4 All-Stars from the Pioneer League, all but one of whom (Ryan Vega) are on MLB.com’s updated top 30 prospect list. Let’s see who made the cut:

Chris Rodriguez

4th round, 2016
19, RHP
Rodriguez had an impressive but short debut in 2016 and so far in 2017 he has a 4.94 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 31 IP. In his last 5 starts and 25 IP, Rodriguez has a 1.80 ERA, 26 Ks and 4 walks.

Elvin Rodriguez

International signing, 2015
19, RHP
Rodriguez has a 3.44 ERA for Orem this year with a 1.06 WHIP. In 34 innings, he has allowed 32 Ks and 6 walks. Rodriguez has a small frame (160#) and that Angels have high hopes for him as he grows and strengthens.

Ryan Vega

14th round, 2015
20, OF
Vega was a standout for the AZL Angels last year with a .413 AVG and .455 OBP in 21 games. He’s hitting .331 for Orem with a .419 OBP this year. He’s only only one of the 4 guys here not currently on a top prospect list.

Leonardo Rivas

International signing, 2015
19, SS
Rivas has 9 stolen bases this year in 27 games with a 100% success rate. He is also hitting .321 with a .447 OBP. Aside from power, he has a pretty well rounded set of tools but may not have the arm to stay at SS long term.
