Who Should the Angels Protect from the Rule 5 Draft?

Keep in mind that we have our eyes on some Free Agents.

It’s that time of year again, when some concern must be given to protecting rule 5 eligible players. According to Baseball-Reference.com, the Angels currently have 35 people on their 40 man roster. We may need some of the empty roster spots for people like Gerrit Cole if everyone gets their wish for Christmas this year. The Rule 5 eligible guys everyone seems to think are the cream of the Angels crop are Luis Rengifo (already on the 40 man roster), Shortstop Leonardo Rivas, and right handed pitchers Luis Pena and Joe Gatto.

Leonardo Rivas

Leonardo Rivas is currently with the Inland Empire 66ers. In 2019 he batted .227/.331/.361/.693. His fielding percentage at shortstop was .945. They tried him out a little bit in the outfield where his fielding percentage was 1.000.

Luis Pena

Luis Pena is currently a Rocket City Trash Panda. Last year between Mobile and Salt Lake City his ERA was 4.80, his WHIP was 1.31, and he pitched 45 innings with 53 strikeouts. Two thirds of those innings were in Mobile and the remainder were in Salt Lake City.

Joe Gatto

Joe Gatto is currently a Rocket City Trash Panda. Last year his ERA was also 4.80. His WHIP was 1.67 and he pitched 54 innings with 57 strikeouts.

Which, if any of these guys do you think the Angels should add to the 40 man roster today?

Do you think any are in danger of being taken in the minor league Rule 5 draft?
