Can we please stop giving this award to Mike Trout? He doesn’t need any more awards. I mean, the dude is probably building an entire room for awards in his new house and by the time it’s done, he’ll need a new house for all his awards. But we need to stop with this one.
Why?
Let’s take a look.
Player of the week June 4th - June 10th, 2012
Follow up week: .160 AVG with 7 Ks and 1 HR. Only 3 RBI. Stole 3 bases.
Player of the week July 7 - July 13, 2014
Follow up week: (10 days due to All Star Break) .238 AVG, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 15 Ks in 46 PAs
Player of the week July 6 - July 12, 2015
Follow up week: (10 days due to All Star Break) .343 AVG, 9 RBI, 5 HR in 39 PAs
Player of the week April 1 - April 7, 2019
Follow up week: 2 for 4 with 6 PAs and 2 walks. Didn’t play much due to injury.
Player of the week June 17 - June 23, 2019
Follow up week: .182 AVG with 4 singles, 1 RBI, and 2 walks.
The good news? Twice Trout has racked going into the All Star break which is where we are right now. Can he do again? The bad news? He generally sucks the week after achieving this award. Of course the exception is in 2015 when he had a fantastic week after being named Player of the Week AND All Star Game MVP for the 2nd year in a row.
Let’s hope he stops getting this award OR he starts hitting like 2015 in the followup week. Is that too much to ask??
