Early Look at Angels Manager Candidates

MLB: Spring Training-Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Angels Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

Last off-season, Brad Ausmus aced his 2 hour manager exam given by GM Billy Eppler. No word if that will be part of the process this time around. My guess? It won’t.

Early speculation points to Joe Maddon as the leading contender and fan favorite. Maddon certainly has a track record with the Angels and has expressed interest in returning. He also lives in Long Beach. Finally, Arte Moreno tend to favor flashy names that can bring in fans, so it would be no surprise if he put up the cash to bring Maddon “back home”.

Joe Maddon

Maddon began coaching with the California Angels in 1993. In total, Maddon was with the Angels organization from 1975 to 2005. He served as a minor league manager, hitting instructor, and scout. He was a coach on the major league team from 1994 to 2005.

Eric Chavez

Eric Chavez played 13 years for the A’s and a few more for the Yankees and Diamondbacks. He also spent some time as a baseball analyst after his player career and in 2015 was a special assistant to Brian Cashman and Billy Eppler for the Yankees. Eppler immediately scooped up Chavez as his special assistant when he became the Angels GM. Chavez managed the Salt Lake Bees for a brief stint in 2018.

Dino Ebel

Ebel has served as Angels Bench coach, a minor league coach, and was with the organization from 2005 to 2018. In 2019, Ebel was the 3rd base coach for the LA Dodgers.

Josh Paul

Paul has been the Angels bench coach for 2 seasons. He was a former catcher who player 2 years under Mike Scioscia. Eppler also has history with him since Paul was a scout in the Yankees organization.

Andy Green

The Padres let Green go before his contract is up. He’ll be looking for a new job but is likely a long shot for the Angels position.

Clint Hurdle

Since 2002, Hurdle has managed the Rockies and Pirates. Only 5 days ago, he believed his job to be safe - and yet here he is in the manager unemployment line.
