Franklin Barreto will miss 4-6 weeks with elbow inflammation

That leaves open a spot on the Opening Day roster

More injury news out of Angels camp, as utility man Franklin Barreto will miss at least the next 4-6 weeks with elbow inflammation.

Barreto was having a great spring for the Angels, as he was hitting .350 with a slugging percentage of .650.

The 25-year-old came over to the Angels as part of the Tommy LaStella trade with the Athletics last season. He didn’t see much action with LA, but his time wasn’t memorable. He went 2-for-17 with eight strikeouts in six games played.

Barreto looked like he had a spot on the Opening Day locked up. With him not set to miss the first month of the season, it looks like Luis Rengifo has a chance of cracking the roster to begin the year. The 24-year-old has experience playing second base, third base and shortstop.

Again, that roster spot still looks to be up for grabs according to manager Joe Maddon. He said that there are other players aside from Rengifo who are in the mix for the final infield spot.

Shohei Ohtani update

  • There’s no set date yet as to when we can see Shohei Ohtani back on the mound. However, Maddon said that we’ll likely be seeing him pitch next week in the Freeway Series with the Dodgers.
