Angels drop fifth consecutive game in ugly fashion

The Angels dropped their fifth consecutive game on Saturday, but this one was definitely their worst of the skid. The Rays defeated the Halos, 13-3.

Ironically, the Angels were actually leading this game early on. After an RBI double from Shohei Ohtani in the third inning, LA led the game 3-2. From the fourth inning on, it was all Tampa Bay.

A four-run inning from the Rays is what began to put the game out of reach. With two on and two out, Alex Cobb was one out away from escaping the inning with the lead. Tampa Bay then strung together back-to-back hits to bring in three runs. A wild pitch from Cobb brought in the fourth run of the inning, giving the Rays a 6-3 lead.

That would be it for Cobb, who was pulled after four innings. For the game, he allowed six runs on six hits and had only three strikeouts.

Relieving Cobb was Jose Quintana, who is experimenting being a reliever after being activated from the Injured List last week. He gave the Angels two innings out of the bullpen, but he allowed two runs on four hits.

Things got even worse after that, as Jose Quijada allowed five runs in the seventh inning. He was only able to record one out before being pulled. In total, the Rays scored 13 runs on 15 hits for the afternoon.

Other notables

• After diving at third base in the seventh inning, Anthony Rendon was removed from the game. Luckily it was just a precautionary measure and he’s not hurt. If you remember, Rendon missed time earlier in the season due to a similar play.
• The Angels are now four games below .500 and 11.5 games out of first place. They’re nine games back of the Wild Card.
