Cow Tipping: June 16th Angels Minor League Report - All Stars Beckon

Last report before we start hearing news on the 2017 draftees!

Conor Lillis-White
Affiliate Teams (from AAA to Rookie):

Games start in Orem (Rookie) on Monday
The DSL (Dominican - Rookie) and AZL (Arizona - Rookie) Angels start up next week as well

Note: I won't be showing the "duds" for the rookie leagues unless they are top prospects or top draft picks. A lot of the guys in the rookie leagues are young and adjusting to pro ball. Many of them never make it past rookie ball, and even the truly gifted ones can have bad weeks, months, etc.

* Player is in the top 10 on the Halos Heaven top prospects list

Burlington Bees (30-36)
Burlington, Iowa
Level = A, Midwest League

Studs:

Julian Leon (C, 21) Started the season in High A then was send to extended spring training. In the 10 game since coming back, he he’s hitting .400 with 2 walks and 8 Ks.

Keith Grieshaber (SS, 21), I mean, I’m not an expert, but he’s having a better season that Baldoquin but didn’t make the All Star Team. Grieshaber has a .377/.484/.547 slashline this year and is hitting .394 over his past 10 games with only 4 K. He’s been playing mostly 3rd base where he’s going this best Yunel Escobar imitation having made 5 errors in 14 games.

Joe Gatto (RHP, 22) Has allowed just 1 run in each of his last 3 starts which amounts to a 1.80 ERA.

Sean Isaac (RHP, 24) Hasn’t allowed a run in his last 8 appearances of 15.2 innings. He’s also struck out 22 in that time and allowed 6 walks. He has a 0.85 ERA in 16 games this year.

Duds:

Sam Pastrone (RHP, 19), Pastrone is only 19 so perhaps his 9.70 ERA is super alarming. However, he has only 26 Ks to 28 walks in 34 innings this year. They moved him to the bullpen for his last two appearances and he gave up 7 runs in 2.1 innings.

Others:

Roberto Baldoquin (SS, 22), Baldoquin is hitting .250 over his last 10 games with 7 Ks and a homer. He was recently named to the Mid-West All Star team despite a less than impressive .258 AVG and 36 Ks on the season.

Erik Manoah (RHP, 22), Along with Balodquin, Manoah was also named to the All Star team. Manoah came to the Angels from the Mets in the Fernando Salas trade. He has a 3.91 ERA this season and 1.43 WHIP with 40 Ks and 27 walks in 53 innings.

Jahmai Jones* (OF, 19), Jahmai is hitting .250 over his past 10 games with a homer and 9 Ks.

Inland Empire 66ers (30-37)
San Bernardino, CA
Level = A+, California League

Studs:

Jesus Castillo (RHP, 21) Castillo has a 3.61 ERA for the 66ers this year. In his last start he allowed just 2 hits and struck out 7 over 5 innings.

Duds:

Connor Justus (SS, 22), is batting just .133 in his last 10 games with 15Ks. He’s clearly struggling with his bat but he does have a .346 OBP this season with 5 homeruns.

Others:

Samil De Los Santos (RHP, 23), Didn’t allow a run in 14.1 innings in A ball and has allowed 4 runs in 11 innings in High A. The later is not a bad number in the well hitting California League. Has 5 Ks, 2 walks, and zero runs in his last two appearances.

Matt Thaiss* (1B, 21), is hitting .262 over his last 10 games with 7 RBIs and only 1 K.

Taylor Ward* (C,23), Ward is hitting .282 in his last 10 games with a homerun, 5 walks, and 8 Ks.

Mobile BayBears (28-37)
Mobile, Alabama
Level = AA, Southern League

Studs:

Connor Lillis-White (LHP, 24) You don’t have to be a high round pick to impressive and this 32nd round pick from 2015 has had a great minor league career so far. In his last 9.1 innings and 4 appearances, he’s allowed ZERO hits OR runs and has struck out 12 while walking 7. Special note that in his 3rd season now he has a career 2.91 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in the minors.

Adam Hofacket (RHP, 23) Has allowed just 1 run and 1 walk in his last 9 innings while striking out 10.

Duds:

Michael Hermosillo (OF, 22), is hitting only .179 in his last 10 games with 9 Ks. He does have 7 walks and a stolen base.

Luis Tejada (1B, 24), The BayBears released Tejada on June 12th. He was signed as a minor league free agent in November of 2016 after spending 7 season in the Padres organization.

Bo Way (OF, 25), after a brief and fairly successful AAA stint, he landed back in AA and is hitting only .143 over his past 10 games with 10 Ks.

Others:

[Moving up - June 15] Jeremy Rhoades (RHP, 24), Rhoades has had a bit of a rough road since he was a 4th round pick in 2014. He finally got called up to AA but just yesterday. He’s allowed 2 runs in his last 9.1 innings of relief.

Wade Wass (C, 25) Had back to back home run games this past week but is only hitting .194 in his last 10 games and .252 on the season. He was named to the Southern League All Star Game. He’s only nabbed 24% of base stealers this year.

Grayson Long* (RHP, 22), Long has given up 12 runs in his last 3 starts over 17 innings. One of those starts, however, was a quality start with 3 runs allowed over 7 innings.

David Fletcher (SS, 22), Fletcher is hitting .282 in his last 10 with 4 walks and 4 Ks.

Salt Lake Bees (36-31 / 1st place)
Salt Lake City, Utah
