Cow Tipping: May 9th Update - Can(ning) Do!

Pitching (mostly) rules this recap

Affiliate Teams (from AAA to Rookie):

Note: I won't be showing the "duds" for the rookie leagues unless they are top prospects or top draft picks. A lot of the guys in the rookie leagues are young and adjusting to pro ball. Many of them never make it past rookie ball, and even the truly gifted ones can have bad weeks, months, etc.

* Player is in the top 20 on the Halos Heaven top prospects list

AZL Angels
(season starts in June)
Tempe, AZ
Level = Rookie, Arizona League

DSL Angels
(season starts in June)
Dominican Republic
Level = Rookie, Dominican Summer League

Orem Owlz
(season starts in June)
Orem, Utah
Level = Rookie, Pioneer League

Burlington Bees (12-16, 7th out of 8)
Burlington, Iowa
Level = A, Midwest League

Studs:

Brandon Marsh (OF, 20), Marsh is hitting .319 over his last 10 game and has a .407 OBP overall this year. He’s striking out a lot (over once per game) but otherwise putting up some great numbers.

Mitchell Traver (RHP, 24), so he’s a bit old (and big - 6’7”, 255#) to be in A ball, but he’s pitching up a storm. Traver just turned 24 and in 23.1 innings over 5 starts, he’s allowed only 4 ER (1.54 ERA), and has a 1.07 WHIP.

Gleyvin Pineda (3B, 21), is hitting .389 over his last 10 games with 7 walks and just 6 Ks. He has a .439 OBP this year.

Torii Hunter (OF, 22), has a .429 AVG over his last 10 games along with 9 walks and 3 stolen bases. He strikes out TONS with 33 Ks and 16 walks over 25 games.

Others:

David MacKinnon (1B, 23), This dude is only hitting .182 over his last 10 games but dang can he draw a walk - 26 in fact over 25 games, and he’s only struck out 20 times. He’s walks 13 times to 10 Ks and 1 home run over his past 10 games.

Jo Adell (OF, 19), Like Marsh, he’s striking out A TON. In his 13 games this year he has 19 Ks and only 3 walks. He has a respectable .283 AVG though and a .382 OBP.

Inland Empire 66ers (14-17, 2nd place)
San Bernardino, CA
Level = A+, California League

Studs:

Jason Alexander (RHP, 25), Alexander, along with Sean Isaac and Zac Ryan combined for a no hitter last week and Alexander tossed 7 no hit innings with 8 Ks.

Daniel Procopio (RHP, 22), has allowed only 1 run all season over 18.1 innings. He’a slo struck out 29 with a BAA of .115 and WHIP at 0.98. Those stats are just plain ridiculous. Procopio was a 10th round pick in the 2017 draft.

Nate Bertness (LHP, 22), over over his last two starts has tossed 9.2 innings and allowed on 1 run and 6 hits with 10 Ks.

Brandon Sandoval (OF, 22), Sandoval continues to hit will with a .344 AVG over his last 10 game including a 3 hit game on Sunday and 3 stolen bases over his past 7 games.

Luis Rengifo (SS, 21), 5 stolen bases in his last 10 games and 17 overall this season. Rengifo is also hitting .361 over his last 10 game with 5 walks and a home run.

Others:

Joe Gatto (RHP, 22), had a great no run, 2 hit outing in his last start but in his prior start he gave up 9 runs over 4 innings. In his 6 starts this year, 2 of them have been blow outs and 4 of them have been scoreless.

Jahmai Jones* (2B, 20), Jones is still struggling a bit with the bat while he gets used to playing second base. He has a .216 AVG in his last 10 games with a home run and 7 Ks.

Roberto Baldoquin (SS, 23), Baldoquin landed on the DL on April 11th. In 18 ABs he had 9 hits including 3 triples and a double. He boasted a .526 OBP and a stolen base.

Mobile BayBears (6-6 2nd place)
Mobile, Alabama
Level = AA, Southern League

Studs:

Griffin Canning (RHP, 21), Hot damn this kid can pitch! Since moving up to Mobile he’s allowed only 2 runs and 7 hits over 15 innings including a 5 inning scoreless and hitless appearance on April 28th.

Taylor Ward* (3B, 24), His bat has been lit up. Over his past 10 games, he’s hitting .342 with 5 walks, 4 stolen bases, and 2 home runs. Ward is slugging .538 this year - far higher than any number he’s had the past few years.

Jesus Castillo (RHP, 22), If you take out his rough start on April 11th, Castillo has allowed only 3 runs over 27.1 innings. He also threw 7 innings of no hit and no run ball back on April 25th and was named pitcher of the week. He has a .188 BAA and 0.99 WHIP on the season.

Greg Mahle (LHP, 25), Only 2 runs allowed over 10.2 innings and 11 appearances this year. He has 10 Ks but also 9 walks and a 1.50 WHIP.

Jeremey Rhoades (RHP, 25), over his last 8 games hasn’t allowed a run. That’s 13.2 scoreless innings with 11 Ks and only 1 walk.

Others:

Brennon Lund (OF, 23), Lund’s average sunk a bit with recent 5 game hitless stretch but he’s 8 for his last 16. It’d be nice if he got his strikeouts down a bit - he’ shad 27 over 27 games but he does have a .374 OBP.

Matt Thaiss* (1B, 22), is hitting .263 with 10 Ks and 2 home runs in his last 10 games. He also has 4 walks and a stolen base.

Connor Justus (SS, 23), Thankfully he walks a lot - 14 in 27 games because his bat has yet to come around this year. Justus is just 3 for his last 34 with 14 Ks.

Salt Lake Bees (8-6 / 2nd place)
Salt Lake City, Utah
Level = AAA, Pacific Coast League

Studs:

[Moving up April 28th] Jake Jewell (RHP, 24), since moving up to the Bees, Jewell has tossed 3.2 scoreless innings with 3 hits and 3 Ks.

Ian Krol (LHP, 26), has given up only 2 runs all season over 14 game and 17.1 innings. He’s sitting on a 1.04 ERA, .1994 BAA and 1.04 WHIP this year.

John Lamb (LHP, 27), Has only given up 1 run and 7 hits over his last 9 innings and 2 starts. He’s also struck out 10. He’s having a pretty good year in Salt Lake with a 3.25 ERA and 1.01 WHIP.

Eric Young Jr. (OF, 32), Still tearing it up and hitting .333 with 3 walks and a stolen base over his last 10 games. He has a .400 OBP this year with r triples.

Jose MIguel Fernandez (1B, 30), Has 2 home runs, 7 walks, an a .324 AVG over his last 10 games. He has a .427 OBP this year with 4 Home runs and more walks (15) than Ks (11).

David Fletcher (SS, 23), This dude can certainly be the future at second base for the Angels. He hits in spring training. He hits during the season. Right now he has a .360 AVG on the year and .350 over his last 10 game with 2 home runs. He has only struck out 6 times all year in 126 ABs and he currently has a 22 game on base streak.

Kaleb Cowart (SS, 25), seriously - still only 25?? Cowart is hitting .351 over his past 10 games with 2 home runs, 7 RBIs, 6 walks, and sadly 12 Ks. He’s slashing .377/.435/.639 over 15 games.

Others:

Michael Hermosillo (OF, 23), This dude hit for the CYCLE!!! That’s pretty damn awesome. Aside from that though he only his .250 over his past 10 games. He DOES have a .348 OBP but tons of swing and miss with 38Ks over 29 games this year.

Ryan Schimpf (OF, 30), After seeing him play parts of two seasons at Petco Park, I’m not surprised to see him hitting .192 with a .312 OBP for Salt Lake.

Parker Bridwell (RHP, 26), On the DL since April 21st

Sherman Johnson (2B, 27), On the DL since April 26th
