Cow Tipping: July 13th Update - Ward is on his way

Now with 100% more rookie ball coverage

MLB: Los Angeles Angels-Media Day Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
Affiliate Teams (from AAA to Rookie):

Note: I won't be showing the "duds" for the rookie leagues unless they are top prospects or top draft picks. A lot of the guys in the rookie leagues are young and adjusting to pro ball. Many of them never make it past rookie ball, and even the truly gifted ones can have bad weeks, months, etc.

* Player is in the top 20 on the Halos Heaven top prospects list

AZL Angels
4-13 (through 6/11)
Tempe, AZ
Level = Rookie, Arizona League

Jeremiah Jackson (SS, 18), 2nd round pick Jackson has played in 7 games and is hitting .269. He’s only walked once to his 19 Ks. He’s also stolen 3 bases in 3 attempts and has a home run.

Jordyn Adams (OF, 18), 1st round pick Adams is hitting a mere .167 but showing good walk discipline with a .412 OBP. He’s stolen 3 bases in 3 attempts over his 5 games.

D’Shawn Knowles (OF, 17), is off to a hot start with a .358 AVG and .435 OBP. He has a home run, a triple, and 3 stolen bases (though he’s been caught 3 times). His 15 Ks are a bit high but he’s only 17 and his other stats are just fine.

Jose Natera (RHP, 18), has a 2.84 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 12.2 innings and 4 games. It’s early, but his numbers are already looking much improved from his 2017 campaign in which he pitched to a 5.06 ERA and 1.38 WHIP.

DSL Angels
11-23 (through 6/11)
Dominican Republic
Level = Rookie, Dominican Summer League

Jose Guzman (SS, 17), signed in February, Guzman is hitting .313 with a .397 OBP in his first pro season. He also has 9 walks to 12 Ks.

Kelvin Moncion (LHP, 19), has a 2.25 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 31 Ks over 24 innings. The Angels signed him in April.

Jenrry Gonzales (LHP, 17), not a bad start for the youngster with a 1.57 ERA across 23 innings. He’s also struck out 23 and has a very good 1.04 WHIP. The Venezuelan was signed last July but made his debut this year (not sure why).

Julio De La Cruz (2B, 17), I’m mostly pointed this guy out because hold cow - 17 errors in 30 games. Ouch. He also leads the team with 4 home runs. In 47 games last year he had 8 total errors so what’s going on here?

Orem Owlz
8-17 (though 6/11)
Orem, Utah
Level = Rookie, Pioneer League

Erven Roper (C, 23), aside from having a pretty cool baseball last name, Roper is hitting .358 (6th best in the league) with a .442 OBP. He has a pair of home runs and has caught 4 of 15 base stealers. Roper also pitched an inning and struck out 2 with 2 hits and a run allowed.

Kevin Maitan (SS, 18), has 2 home runs and a .255 AVG through 22 games. He free swinging with 21 Ks and only 4 walks.

Livian Soto (SS, 18), is hitting only .214 but at least has a .33 OBP. He’s walked more time (9) than he has struck out (8). He also has 3 stolen bases in 3 attempts.

Nonie Williams (OF, 20), has moved from IF to OF but his bat is still greatly lagging The 3rd round pick is now in his 3rd season with the org and his average has gone down each year. Right now he’s hitting .156 with 21 Ks in 77 ABs.

Cole Duensing (RHP, 20), didn’t throw well in Orem last year and so far in 2018 has given up 18 ER on 20 hits in 14.1 innings. Not good numbers so far for the 6th round 2016 pick.

(2018 7th round) Andrew Wantz (RHP, 22), Wantz some more Ks? Wantz has 23 Ks in 10.2 innings. Yeah it’s rookie ball, but woah! Not really sustainable but still fun. Let’s just ignore his 9 walks for now.

(2018 6th round) Austin Warren (RHP, 22), Warren has given up 3 home runs in 12 innings along with 17 hits and 6 walks. His 1.92 WHIP is a bit rough at the moment.

(2018 9th round) Jake Lee (RHP, 23), Not a single walk over 8 innings. Pretty good for a rookie. He’s also struck out 8.

(2018 8th round) Tyler Smith (RHP, 22), Smith has 12 Ks and 4 walks over 12.2 innings. He’s given up 14 hits including 2 home runs.

(2018 10th round) Ben Morrison (RHP, 23), 15 runs (11 of them earned) in only 12 innings. Well that’s no good. He also has 8 Ks and 3 home runs allowed.

Note: Among qualified pitchers, Orem has 3 of the top 8 guys with the most walks allowed and 4 of the top 12. They lead the pioneer league in walks and WHIP.

Brandon Marsh (OF, 20), Marsh is on fire, including 8 for his last 12 and a .350 AVG over his past 10 games.

[Moving up] Jorge Tavarez (RHP, 22), Tavarez started the season with the Bees and has lit up the Cal League in his 10 innings with just 1 run allowed and 10 Ks.

Aaron Cox (RHP, 23), the brother-in-law of Mike Trout is pitching a good bounce back season after a 50 game suspension for Ritalin combined with an injury took him out last year. He’s only allowed 1 run over his last 7 appearances and 8.2 innings and has a 2.45 ERA over his past 10 games.

Brennon Lund (OF, 23), started out the season a little slow but is hitting .308 over his past 10 games. He’s also starting to show a bit more power with 7 home runs over his 75 games. He had 9 home runs over his prior 2 season.

Daniel Procopio (RHP, 22), over his past 9 games has a 1.90 ERA with 22 Ks and 9 hits in 14.2 innings.

Salt Lake Bees
46-45 (through 6/12)
Salt Lake City, Utah

Studs:

Taylor Ward* (3B, 24), There are studs and there is Taylor Ward. Ward is hitting .568 over his past 10 games with 2 home runs, 11 RBIs, 7 walks, and a stolen base. He has a 1.098 OPS in his 33 games at Salt Lake. See you soon Ward!

Griffin Canning (RHP, 21), Well crap. Canning is learning. He was beat up to the tune of 14 runs in his first two AAA starts but last time he allowed just 1 run on 2 hits over 4.2 innings. He still needs to work on pitch efficiency since that took him 89 pitches to get that far into the game.

[Moving up] Luis Rengifo (SS, 21), Has been in a bit of a funk with a .167 AVG over his past 10 games but was just called up to AAA so we’ll see what he can do there.
