Cow Tipping: April Update - Canning throwing blanks

First trip around the minors for 2019

MLB: Spring Training-Los Angeles Angels at Chicago Cubs Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports
Affiliate Teams (from AAA to Rookie):

Note: I won't be showing the "duds" for the rookie leagues unless they are top prospects or top draft picks. A lot of the guys in the rookie leagues are young and adjusting to pro ball. Many of them never make it past rookie ball, and even the truly gifted ones can have bad weeks, months, etc.

* Player is in the top 20 on the Halos Heaven top prospects list

AZL Angels
Start playing in June
Tempe, AZ
Level = Rookie, Arizona League

DSL Angels
Start playing in June
Dominican Republic
Level = Rookie, Dominican Summer League

Orem Owlz
Start playing June 14th
Orem, Utah
Level = Rookie, Pioneer League

Burlington Bees
10-5 (through 4/18)
Burlington, Iowa
Level = A, Midwest League

Studs:

Jake Lee (RHP, 23) Lee has struck out 15 over 11 innings in 3 starts. He hasn’t walked a single batter and has a WHIP of 0.73.

Ben Morrison (RHP, 24) Over 5 appearances he has a .143 BAA, hasn’t allowed an earned run and has struck out 6 in 6 innings. He is 2 for 3 in saves but his lone blown save was a game in which he allowed hits but zero earned runs.

Austin Kryzeminski (RHP, 22) 7Ks in 7.2 IP with zero earned runs allowed. Kryzeminski was re-assigned to the Arizona Angels on April 17th for some reason.

Christopher Molina (RHP, 21) He’s only allowed 2 runs and 7 hits over 3 starts and 14 IP.

Robinson Pina (RHP, 21) Pina, like many of the Bees pitchers has a pretty high walk rate with 8 over 14.2 innings. He also has 15 Ks and a 2.45 ERA over his 3 starts.

Michael Stefanic (2B, 23) He’s off to a great start with a .412 AVG and .474 OBP over 34 ABs

Others:

Cole Duensing (RHP, 20) Despite a 2.31 ERA, I couldn’t put him in the studs since he has walked 12 and allowed 12 hits over 11.2 IP. His WHIP is 2.06 which is not great. This is most likely a case of a very deceptive ERA.

*Jose Soriano (RHP, 20) Soriano, like Duensing may have a deceptive ERA (also 2.31). He has served up 11 hits and 8 walks over 11.2 innings.

*Jordyn Adams (OF, 19) Last year’s 1st round pick is off to a slow start with a .200 AVG but at least has a .328 OBP to go with it. He’s struck out 20 times to 9 walks over 50 AB.

*Livian Soto (SS, 18) Has a home run, 7 RBI, 7 walks, and 4 SB with a .255 AVG and .357 OBP.

Gleyvin Pineda (3B, 22) Hitting .302 this year with a .423 OBP but just .286 over his last 10 games with 14 Ks.

Inland Empire 66ers
7-8 (through 4/18)
San Bernardino, CA
Level = A+, California League

Studs:

Jorge Tavarez (RHP, 23) Has struck out 9 over 7 inning while allowing only 1 run.

Brett Hanewich (RHP, 24) Hasn’t allowed a run over 5.2 innings and has only given up 3 hits. He also has 7 Ks and 5 walks.

*Chris Rodriguez (RHP, 20) has only started two games of 2.2 inning each but hasn’t allowed run, gave up only 2 total hits and struck out 6. Rodriguez was out all last year so they are taking it easy with him.

Nate Bertness (LHP, 23) Bertness only started one game but he gave up just 1 hit and no walks with 6 Ks over 4 innings.

Luis Madero (RHP, 22) Just 1 ER with 16 Ks over 11 innings, Madero is off to a hot start this year.

Isaac Mattson (RHP, 23) 4 appearances, 10 innings, and 16 Ks with 5 hits and just one run allowed.

Austin Warren (RHP, 22) Warren has a 1.08 ERA over 5 appearances and 8.1 innings. He’s also struck out 8.

Mobile BayBears
5-7 (through 4/18)
Mobile, Alabama
Level = AA, Southern League

Studs:

Joe Gatto (RHP, 23) Gatto hasn’t allowed a run in 3 appearance over 6 IP. He also has 6 Ks and has given up only 1 hit.

*Patrick Sandoval (LHP, 22) Normally a 3.00 ERA doesn’t get you on the stud list but Sandoval has 18 Ks over 9 innings - so that’ll do it.

Jason Alexander (RHP, 26) One of the oldest dudes on the team, Alexander has a .120 BAA and 0.75 WHIP in the early going. He’s made 2 appearance and has struck out 6 over 8 innings.

Others:

*Jahmai Jones (2B, 21) Rough start for Jones who is hitting .119 with 14 Ks over 42 ABs.

*Brandon Marsh (OF, 21) Like Jones, he’s off to a rough start with a .213 AVG and .288 OBP. he has 11 Ks, 5 walks, and 4 stolen bases. He also already has an outfield assist.

Jesus Castillo (RHP, 23) A rough fall league and not so great spring caused him to be bumped from the 40 man roster where he had been for Rule 5 protection. He’s not off to a great start with a 5.40 ERA and .260 BAA over 11.2 innings.

Salt Lake Bees
4-10 (through 4/19)
Salt Lake City, Utah
Level = AAA, Pacific Coast League

Super Studs:

*Griffin Canning (RHP, 23) Canning is blowing away AAA through 3 starts. He’s tossed 16 innings with 17 Ks, 13 hits, 1 run, and 2 walks.

Studs:

Jose Briceno (C, 26) Briceno is hitting .321 with a .367 OBP. He also has 3 home runs and 9 RBIs.

Wilfredo Tovar (SS, 27) Tovar’s .395 OBP isn’t even the best on the team but it’s a great number. He’s hitting .333 through 10 games.

*Taylor Ward (3B, 25) Ward has played a few games for the big league club but also has 6 games for the Bees where he’s hitting .333 with a .469 OBP and a home run. He has 6 walks to just 4 Ks.

Ty Kelly (2B, 30) I had forgotten the Angels signed him back in February. He’s hitting .368 with a .455 OBP in 19 ABs.

Others:

Jared Walsh (1B/OF/LHP, 25) At the plate, Walsh is hitting .241 with a .297, but on the mound he’s thrown 2 scoreless and hitless innings with 3 Ks and 1 walk.

*Matt Thaiss* (1B, 23) Has a .313 OBP and a .214 AVG through 56 ABs. Over his last 10 games he’s only hitting .171.

*Luis Rengifo (SS, 22) He’s hitting .262 on the season and .293 over his last 10 games. He also has a pair of home runs he’s hit over his pst 4 games.
