Fletcher is hitting .313/.377/.438 this season, all from the leadoff spot, and he’s started games at shortstop, second base, and third base. Fletcher leads the team in Baseball-Reference WAR (1.7), and is second to only Anthony Rendon in FanGraphs WAR (1.5).
Luis Rengifo gets the start at second base on Wednesday against Padres right-hander Dinelson Lamet.
Shohei Ohtani is starting atop the Angels batting order for the first time in his career.
Jason Castro starts at catcher for the Padres, his first game since getting traded by the Angels on Sunday.
San Diego made a series of roster moves before Wednesday’s game, adding some of the bevy of players they traded for at the deadline. Mike Clevinger, Greg Allen, and Dan Altavilla were added to the active roster, and Allen starts in right field. Clevinger will start on the mound for San Diego in Thursday’s series finale.
The Padres also placed Wil Myers and Emilio Pagan on the injured list before this two-game series.
