More bad news for the Angels

The Angels just can’t seem to escape the injury bug, unfortunately. After losing Dexter Fowler for the season this weekend, Joe Maddon told reporters that third baseman Anthony Rendon will be placed on the 10-day Injured List with a left groin strain.

Maddon was hopeful about Rendon missing only 10 days, but he was hesitant to put a time table on it. With Rendon being out for the next week at least, the club recalled infielder Jack Mayfield from the Alternate Site.

That wasn’t the only move the club made, as they optioned pitcher Jaime Barria and called up right-handed pitcher Ben Rowen as well.

When asked who could see the workload at third base while Rendon is out, Maddon said that it will be Jose Rojas. He also added that Mayfield could see late-inning action depending on the defensive adjustments.

Shohei Ohtani update

Maddon said that Ohtani threw a 10-pitch bullpen session without a bandage on Monday afternoon.

“It was just a nice light piece,” Maddon said. “He felt really good. We’ll build off that. Just trying to be overly-cautious.”

When asked about how long this process will take to build Ohtani back up, he said that we can expect more bullpen sessions from him.

“He’ll have to do an intense bullpen before,” Maddon said. “We don’t want to go from 0 to 60 and have it become bad again. It has to be gradual. How long? We’re not sure. It’s definitely going to be a step-by-step process.”

If Ohtani were to return anytime soon, the expectation would be that it would come this Sunday at Angel Stadium against the Twins. Maddon isn’t certain as to whether or not Ohtani will be ready by then.

“I can’t tell you with 100 percent certainty but I bet he’d be unable to [be back by then]”.
